Business Q&A: Bikram Yoga

RVC studio specializes in a specific type of yoga.

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned veteran, has a mat waiting for you.

The South Park Avenue Studio offers a variety of classes that focus on the unique exercise. The studio is owned by John and Yolanda Nash. Here, the couple explains why Bikram Yoga is worth a visit.

What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises practiced in a room that is 105 degrees with 40 percent humidity. Each posture stretches, strengthens and prepares specific muscles, ligaments, and joints needed for the next posture. The Bikram method also stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100 percent of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order. Bikram scientifically designed this 90-minute program to deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body in order to prevent illness (and) injury, promote weight loss and limit the effects of aging.

What type of classes do you offer?

Our studio is dedicated exclusively to Bikram Yoga. We offer more than 30 classes a week, ranging from early bird classes (6 a.m.) to evening classes (8:15 p.m.). (We can) accommodate all types of schedules.

What can customers find on your website?

Our website provides details on what Bikram Yoga is and the benefits (of it). (The site also includes) information for first timers on how to prepare, what to bring, etc. Students can also find our class schedule online and see who is teaching each class. We've even put together a really helpful parking map (hard copies are available at the studio). We know that parking in RVC can sometimes be challenging; the last thing a yogi should worry about is when their meter expires — so we've figured all that out for them! Students can also buy packages and gift certificates online, learn more about our teachers, read about events, news and get tips and tricks from us for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

What advice do you have for customers who are just starting to do yoga?

Our advice is to have patience with yourself. Take it one day at a time. Even though the 26 postures and the sequence itself never changes, how our bodies react to it change every class. One of our teachers likes to say, 'it's yoga practice, not yoga perfect,' which is a perfect way to sum it up. This yoga can heal you — both physically and mentally, and our staff is very supportive. From a logistical standpoint, first-timers (and anyone, really) should make sure they come to class well-hydrated (water or coconut water) and on an empty stomach. We recommend not eating for at least three hours prior to class. Wear light clothing, and be ready to sweat and have fun! We have a great first time special right now too — $30 for 30 consecutive days.

What is your busiest time of year?

Thankfully, our classes are consistently busy. We do see an increase in new students in early January. Lots of great New Year's resolutions!
