The Rock
Oh what a shock that Lynda's opposition chooses to attack her rather than present their side of the…Read More issues. It is the same tactic used to scare the parents of our youth into thinking that if they don't pass the school budget, their children will not have a field to play soccer on. The truth is that the budget is bloated with things we can do without and can be cut. Within a 3 year period my two children received the same education, yet my taxes increased by $ thousands of dollars. Wake up or you will be looking elsewhere to live because the taxes will drive you out
One other point - when Rubino is elected she is only ONE vote of five. She cannot unilaterally stop…Read More or reverse anything. So ask your self this - why is the Admin so very worried about her? Maybe because they would not be able to so tightly control the release of financial information and the spin put on the school rankings? That should trouble every Village resident but especially those of us with kids in the school. I for one would like way more information on the finances of a$100 million dollar budget that is three times the size of the Village budget.
Wrong on all counts again Chris. My family is voting yes on the budget AND for Rubino. We need a…Read More whole new thread on why voting no on the budget won't solve any problems. Austerity will not save real $$ and that WILL just affect all the things the kids love (sports, clubs, etc). 80% of the budget goes to salaries, pension and healthcare. THAT'S the third rail of the School Budget issue that no one wants to discuss. Have you been in the classrooms? I have. In fact I am a product of RVC schools myself. (Another great thread would be the fiasco of the BOE decision to close Morris School and then paying big bucks to add on to every single elementary school but I digress). There are way too many adults on the payroll and in Admin. I am not talking about GREAT teachers. They are priceless. I am talking about a LOT of folks who are under employed in what they do but blow holes in our soaring budget. I also understand that maybe you or some of our neighbors are employed in the schools and any job loss in this economy is devastating. But I for one do not believe that every single employee in the RVC school system is vital and losing some of them to right size the budget is not going to increase class size, and it is not going to affect our kids' learning. It may just bring sanity to the school budget and allow young people to afford RVC and our seniors to stay. That said, why is it that the current BOE does not have any discussion of these hard choices - at least not in public? Let's HAVE these discussions. Let's MAKE the hard choices with lots of community in put. Let's shine a light on what has been a very closed process, completely lacking transparency, with only one result - soaring school taxes that hurt the entire community. Like I said I think our kids will be just fine when Rubino is elected. I'm hoping it will also let my wallet recover too. I don't see those as mutually exclusive goals.
A vote for Rubino is a no vote for the budget. Wake up. Pretty obvious. I guess she feels that…Read More the current BOE is clueless and unethical. Keep attacking our public schools. The one thing that most if not all of us moved here for. And yes, if you are a second or third generation family member living in RVC, your family moved here years ago for that reason. And if you want to move at some point, be happy your realitor can talk about the great schools we have. Sour grapes
Been there done that: how disgusting of you to list descriptions of the PTA president and then hide…Read More behind your anonymous posting. You should be ashamed of yourself. Want someone to post your employment status??
I'm enjoying your selective issues
Never said the demographics changed, you clearly missed my point…Read More
The bond was passed because the elementary parents got involved. Also, the bond was a smart move, borrowing money at such a low rate. Any accountant would tell you that
The bond vote has NOTHING to do with affording college. One is $120 a year, the other is a 30 to 50 K expenditure.
If you think the rise of 2 year colleges admissions doesn't have to do with the economy, then we can end our discussion now.
The superintendent was given a 1 time annuity. Next year, he will be back to his usual top 10 ranking. Once again, nothing to do with test scores and if the public was so outraged, why aren't the board members being recalled?
Still waiting for link of the 500 ranking in NYS
Haven't located it
Two Points: The demographics of the village have not changed dramatically during the last year so…Read More that would not account for the decline in rankings.
You can't blame the economy for the low percentage of students going to a four year college and then justify passing a $46 million bond on cash strapped residents, pay our superintendent the highest salary in the country, raise administrators pay $50,000 each over the last 4 years, etc., etc. You can't have it both ways.
Hey Matt Hogan, While I don't buy into posts that you are Johnson's press secretary and him having…Read More a hand in running this publication, I do believe myself and many other readers here would appreciate an in depth, unbiased and objective interview w/ him asking the tuff questions your readers asked here. He always seems available to comment on and inflate the slightest bit of positive news, perhaps he would like the opportunity to comment on and explain his take on the latest rankings, etc. Have you or any member of your staff ever directly interviewed him or requested and interview w/ him and would you consider requesting such an interview?
It is nothing short of amazing that people are still rushing to the defense of Johnson/Burris and…Read More their minions at the PTA. What's wrong w/ you people? When the rankings come out positive they do everything they can to publicise them from plaques on the wall to streaming video on the district website and everything in between. Yet not a peep on the latest rankings. 500+ ranking in NYS, people thats based solely on test scores not the # of kids taking the test and how many free lunches the district provides. Do any of you wonder at all why Johnson encouraged kids to "opt out" of NYS testing? If so let me help you out...The scores are going to be awful and would have been worse had all the kids participated. The quality of life in this town and its education system is circling the bowl, we need positive change not the same old go along to get along mentality. Pls think about voting for Ms Rubino, we need some balance and accountability on that board not a bunch of Johnson puppets. Not sure when Johnson's contract is up but he too has got to go, he is slowly destroying this district. We might try to hire Baldwin's superintendant as he really seems to know what he is doing when it comes to AP.
This is the funniest blog post ever. Someone thinks Patch is run by Johnson, another should have…Read More used the more appropriate pseudonym "know it all" and the most recent thinks the PTA is ruining our neighborhood. Go to a meeting, get involved, educate yourself. If you can't go to a meeting watch the local government and school channel. Then perhaps you would know that the bulk of the school budget is dictated by NY state.
