SSHS Boys' Soccer Tryouts Begin

Coach Fred Paul said the team is primed for a state championship run.

South Side High School's varsity boys' soccer team is returning seven of its 11 starters, and Coach Fred Paul said he thinks that may be the key to a championship season. But before his team can make that run, he needs to cut down 39 hopefuls to a squad of 24, which he began doing at tryouts last Monday.

Though the boys' team won the Nassau County Championship last year, they lost in the state final to Cosmewogue. Paul said the team's motto this year is "March to Middletown," a pledge to win this year's state championship, which is played in Middletown, NY. Paul said he is looking for a certain type of player during tryouts.

"I want the guy who plays intelligent soccer," he said. "We're not a bunch of superstars. We have a workman's attitude. I need guys that can do that."
