PLAYOFF PREVIEW: South Side vs. Garden City

Lady Cyclones try to knock off the undefeated Trojans in the Class B semifinals.

The South Side Lady Cyclones (10-4) will face-off against the undefeated Garden City Trojans tomorrow in the Class B playoff semifinal at Denton Avenue field.

The last time South Side faced Garden City, both teams were undefeated and a second-half comeback by the Trojans sent the Lady Cyclones to their first, regular season loss.

In their quarterfinals matchup against Lynbrook, Garden City blew out the Owls, 18-2. Alexandra Bruno and Krista Dampman scored three goals each for Garden City, and its goalies, Megan McDonald and Erin Mullins, combined for three saves.

The Lady Cyclones took care of Plainedge last week in their quarterfinal matchup, 15-9, and sophomores Michaela Lynch and Liz Hoeffner combined for ten goals. Garden City has eliminated a girls' South Side playoff team in each sports season this year: soccer, basketball and softball. Can South Side exact some revenge?

South Side

Michaela Lynch — The sophomore midfielder has come on in the last few games, becoming a legitimate scoring threat alongside senior middie Jackie Cifarelli. In her last game against Garden City, Lynch recorded a hat trick.

Jackie Cifarelli — One of the go-to scorers for South Side. The senior middie will play Division I lax at Ohio State in the fall and is one of the team's leading offensive threats. Lynch poured in four goals against Garden City in the loss. She also played on the varsity soccer team that lost to the Trojans in the playoff semifinals last year, so Cifarelli may want some pay back.

Garden City

Caroline Tarzian - One of the star attack positions on the team, Tarzian led the county in scoring. In their game against Cold Spring Harbor on May 12, she notched eight points.

Mikeala Rix and Barbara Sullivan - Team captains and are both members of the United States Under 19 Women's Team.  This year, they will be representing the U.S. in a tournament in Germany.  Both are mid-fielders, and only 16 field players were chosen for the team.
