Village Board Approves Two Local Laws, Designates Rec Center as Sole Polling Location for June 21 Election

Trustees took action on legislation for snow removal and outdoor uses for businesses in the commercial district.

The Village Board of Rockville Centre approved two new local laws that dealt with snow removal and outdoor uses for commercial businesses at Tuesday's board meeting, as well as outlined proposed planning code changes to lot coverage, overall height and setbacks for residential homes.

Local laws 17-10 and 1104 were unanimously approved on Tuesday night, while three other proposed laws on the agenda were tabled until the Feb. 8 meeting for further discussion.

Local law 17-10 prohibits all outdoor uses above the first floor for any business in the commercial district, unless it is authorized by the board. Businesses that already use its above ground-floor property will be grandfathered in, as well as those with applications to do so that were submitted to the village by Jan. 1. After five years, however, those businesses will need a special permit to continue its above ground-level outdoor use of its property.

The other law approved, Local Law 1104, dealt with materials unlawfully deposited on village property. Trustee David Krasula said this became a problem during last month's blizzard, when residents paid independent contractors to remove snow from their property and dumped it back onto village property that was already plowed. This cost the village valuable time and resources, as village plows had to re-canvas those areas.

The new law will levy a fine for those who do this, and residents will have to go to village court to settle it.

The board also approved a resolution designating the  as the sole polling location for the June 21 village election. Voters can cast their ballots between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The three other proposed laws that will be discussed on Feb. 8 deal with the time construction may start and end — possibly moving the start time for contractors from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. — as well as proposed changes to the village's planning codes for building set backs, height and lot coverage for residential homes.

Patch will feature and outline the proposed planning code changes in an article on Thursday.
