RVC Library to Stay Open Some Sundays

The Rockville Centre Public Library will remain open on some Sundays after it received funds from New York State.

The library board had written in a letter on May 15 that unfunded mandates led to its decision to close the library on Sunday. The proposed budget passed a week later.

Library officials approached state Sen. Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, and requested bullet aid to keep the facility open on Sundays. The senate majority leader came through with $45,000 for this fiscal year, said library director Maureen Chiofalo.

The actual dates of the Sundays the library will be open have not been decided, but it is likely that it will be mid-October through May.

At the end of May, Rockville Centre resident Paul Carnevale took to petitions site Change.org to urge local elected officials to keep the library open. He has now closed his petition and marked it a “Victory.”

“Having this resource/treasure open for the public is a tremendous positive for the entire community,” he said.
