Hempstead Town Notebook: Letter to the Editor Bashes Animal Shelter

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

Letter to the Editor: TOH Animal Shelter Duping the Public

In a letter to the editor earlier this week, Hempstead Town resident Lucille DeFina said that the town, specifically the animal shelter, "continues to dupe the public with their 'smoke and mirror' mentality to waste our tax dollars and secure patronage positions."

See what else DeFina had to say in her letter.

Town Searching for Volunteers for Animal Shelter's Pet Foster Program

Do you love animals? Do you believe that all cats and dogs deserve to live in a nice home with a loving family? If you answered "yes" to either question, the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter wants you to volunteer for The Little One Fostering Program.

Volunteers for foster program can help the animals in many different ways: a baby kitten may need to be bottle-fed, a dog may require some behavioral training and all animals will appreciate the added love and attention. The shelter will provide a foster home with training, food, supplies and medical care for the duration of the animal’s stay, which will vary from case to case.

Foster volunteers will report back to the shelter's volunteer coordinator on a regular basis -- this allows the shelter to monitor the animals' progress and provide any assistance that foster families may need.

At the end of the animal's stay with the foster family, the cat/dog will return to the shelter in Wantagh, where it will wait to be adopted by a family that will provide it with a permanent home. Foster families do have the option to adopt their new friend, rather than having the shelter make the animal available for adoption.

Murray Administration Receives Top Municipal Budgeting Honors

Supervisor Kate Murray announced that Hempstead Town has earned the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award given by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) -- a group of independent accounting professionals. It is the eighth consecutive year that Hempstead Town has received the honor awarded annually by the independent, non-partisan Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

According to the town, the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award is the highest distinction in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

Stop it already town officials the public is becoming alot smarter than you think. You have dozens of eager, experienced volunteers waiting since Aug. of 2011 to be allowed to comfort & walk those dogs, yet they're still not welcome.Stop pretending to be searching for volunteers when they're all right under your nose & willing to start tomorrow. You can't seem to accomplish this so let me suggest that you take your few hand picked volunteers & allow them access to BOTH the urgent animals which are hidden out of public view in the back of the shelter & even more importantly the 25 tohas dogs languishing & suffering, tormented due to lack of human contact, which you're hiding & housing at the old Wantagh Bide a Wee location. You have kept the public in total darknesss regarding the lives of these animals & with each day that passes they become less reachable. They're there just waiting to die & you can't even advertise or encourage the public to view them as they are LIVING PROOF that your sham programs & services have been nonexistant, a complete failure. You have a $3+ Million Dollar salary payroll & yet the majority of our homeless animals never see the sun or breathe fresh air. You're USING your few volunteers to show up at adoption events while the purpose of this program was to soothe & assist animals within the shelter. Maybe you should perfect your proclaimed volunteer program before launching other smoke & mirrors programs. Time to protect the animals not the patronage

I agree with Logan,on all points. In addition, it is not the results of the Ag/Markets report we are waiting for, which TOH is using to fool/distract the public as they have never shared the outcome before 2010. Let's see how the shelter rates regarding the State Comptroller and Attorney General. I want DA Rices question answered, whether the money has ever gone to the animals. Visit the rear of Bide A Wee (no signs to lead the public there)and see for yourself if the money or volunteers have helped sustain and serve 27 dogs, which many have lost their minds over the past 6+ months; no real programs in place which would have saved them. Murray may have inherited patronage, but they are still moving up the ladder, and the shelter is still a GOP mill. Kate has has ample time to give power to the new shelter director and assistant director to reform the shelter, yet her 2 legged republican club friends remain at the wheel, still the very reasons why the killing continues to take place at tohas. The $3k monthly crematory charge remains the same @ Murrays $7.45 Million dollar kill facility, which WE apy for. Please visit www.hopeforhempsteadshelter.org to learn more. Don't wait for TOH to help the as they have failed the animals, and our taxpayers, every step of the way.

If we cannot take an animal into our home, is there something else we can do to help them.....donations, etc? Can we be sure the animals get the donation?
Thank you emmb

testing!
Lucille March 4, 2012 at 11:10 pm
Elaine go to www.hopeforhempsteadshelter.org to learn how you can help! Donations are NOT needed in the case of the Hempstead Shelter. They already are taking $7.45 MILLION DOLLARS FROM US in our tax money!! The animals have not seen or benefited from this amount of money over the years! The only ones who have reaped the benefits were the over paid - unskilled patronage employees! We can't let that continue any longer, the party is over. We must demand more for our animals! Now there are some good NEW people coming in and some NEW programs in place but Town Officials are standing in the way and not letting them do their jobs! WE NEED THE VOLUNTEERS IN ASAP!! Once genuine kind caring people are behind those doors, the rest will fall into place!!! Please get involved, don't donate money,..donate your time! Go to the Hope for Hempstead website and Facebook page and you will be guided and instructed on how you can help! The community needs to speak up! Each and every person, no voice is too small!

I am so glad Lucille and my fellow taxpayers brought out the truth about what goes on in this place. The dogs and cats are being used to fund the republican patronage and are being taken advantage of AND as a taxpayer they are taking advantage of me too and I am sick of it!!!!! We must have full disclosure and transparency at this shelter. We must stop the killing and change things in this dump. @ Elaine, try to volunteer if they will let you and adopt an animal out of there and save a life. You can try to bring treats and blankets but will the animals see it? Who knows.
Marianne Lappas March 5, 2012 at 12:31 am
I have been to the Hempstead Shelter and have seen the animals sitting in the back no one is supposed to see. Bleeding and not taking care of then they realized they should not have let me see that room. What a crock do they think we are that niave or stupid. They are hiding behind the government. Anyone that tells what they see is out.
Joe March 5, 2012 at 01:36 pm
You just can't let anyone walk in and volunteer, I know it sounds simple but it just doesn't work that way especially when 90% of the dogs are pit bulls! People how about helping feed the hungrey HUMANS on LI, then worrying about treats and blankets!!
Laurie Lat March 5, 2012 at 01:49 pm
@Joe- I do worry about humans, but they are working with a $7 million dollar budget, I also worry about how they are using my tax dollars. You should too.
Cecelia Sommers March 5, 2012 at 03:50 pm
Shame on the TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD as usual the public is unaware of what these (BUFFERS) are doing they should all be taken out of office since they are murderers and are using our tax dollars to pay for their crimes
Laurie Lat March 5, 2012 at 04:11 pm
@ Cecelia, exactly! Kill the kitty took place many years ago, but this dump hasn't been cleaned up and I dread what they do behind closed doors. Why can't we go in the garage? What are they hiding? They were going to kill my little dog and all he needed was a good bath and good food. For $7 million dollars they couldn't get him a haircut? Shame on this place and shame on Kate Murray.
LJ March 6, 2012 at 01:24 am
This sounds like a big time scandal. Pity these poor animals. Someone who knows whats going on here at the shalter and has PROOF, needs to blow this to the press .
Laurie Lat March 6, 2012 at 01:50 pm
They are making too much money AND they don't care about the animals. Please google kill the kitty video. It's from a long time ago, but it shows what goes on there. Shameful. they are KILLING our animals and we are paying for it.
