Election 2011: Scannell Defeats Browne in 5th Legislative District

Joseph Scannell, first elected in 2000, won Tuesday's election over Republican challenger Christian Browne.

Democratic incumbent Joseph Scannell, D-Baldwin, defeated Republican challenger Christian Browne in the 5th Legislative District race on Tuesday night, according to unofficial results from the Nassau County Board of Elections.

Scannell, who will serve his seventh term as Legislator, garnered 5,527 to Browne's 4,854 with 91 percent of precincts reported as of 12:45 a.m.

Over the last two years, Legislator Scannell has presented the Village of Rockville Centre with more than $400,000 in funding for the refurbishment of Centennial Park, including a new playground surface, public bathrooms and auxiliary police office; secured $100,000 in funding for the renovation of Firefighters Memorial Park to accommodate the addition of three steel beams from the World Trade Center and just recently delivered a new Traffic Enforcement Vehicle for the Rockville Centre Police Department.
