As a spirited young man determined to serve has community and help his fellow residents, Thomas E. Cook joined the Rockville Centre Fire Department 57 years ago.

Tonight he stands before us having compiled one of the most impressive careers in the annals of the department. You name the firematic position and Thomas has probably held it. Line officer, alarm committee chairman, tournament judge, fire inspector, fire police member and, of course, honorary chief.

Indeed, Thomas Cook has brought unique distinction and sheer determination to each and every post. He has earned the respect of his colleagues and the esteem of his community.

Our honoree was also the hero in one of the most gallant rescues in department history when he rescued two women and three children from a raging furniture store fire in 1973.

Approaching his 57th anniversary of service, this is one more shining moment in a brilliant firematic career and tonight our township bestows a heartfelt tribute upon a true gentleman and a trusted volunteer. Let us salute, 2013 Firematic Service Award recipient, Honorary Chief Thomas E. Cook of the Rockville Centre Fire Department.

The assistant chief of the Woodmere Fire Department was recently honored for his daring rescue of an elderly man trapped in a burning apartment.

Chief Benjamin Nelson was among 33 first responders from 15 departments honored by the Town of Hempstead during its annual Firematic Service Awards. Recipients were honored for various deeds, including life-saving rescues and acts of valor within the communities they serve.

“Heroes rise to the occasion, especially in times of adversity,” Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray said. “Tonight, we celebrated stories of heroism and benevolence, and expressed gratitude to the fine citizens that protect their neighbors each and every day.”

Here’s the town’s description of Nelson’s heroic act:

One of the year’s most treacherous fires in the community of Woodmere occurred right across the street from the Central Avenue Firehouse. The proximity of the burning apartment complex didn’t lessen the sheer danger of a fire-ravaged building.

Arriving by car and first on the scene, Chief Benjamin Nelson realized time was of the essence.  Without the protection of a hose line, breathing apparatus, turnout gear or fire tools, he braved the raging flames and quickly found the apartment on fire.

After kicking open the apartment door, our hero persevered through smoke, darkness, heat and debris until he found the 83 year-old tenant who was overcome by the fire and smoke. With supreme danger lurking at every move, Chief Nelson carried the man from the building. When medical personnel arrived the man was transported to a local hospital where he enjoyed a complete and timely recovery.

Chief Nelson’s heroism and courage are even more remarkable considering he had previously injured the fingers and wrist of his right hand while in the line of duty as a New York City Police Officer. With his dominant right hand incapacitated, the chief performed valiantly as a novice “lefty” relying on his instincts and expertise.

A combination firefighter and police officer, Chief Nelson walks comfortably in the role of public protector. One hand or two, he is man of uncommon valor and bravery. Tonight Hempstead Town proudly presents 2nd Assistant Chief Benjamin Nelson of Woodmere with the 2013 Firematic Service Award.
