An unknown number of suspects broke into a local Waldbaum's late Friday night and tried to rob two safes, but couldn't open them and left emptyhanded, authorities said.
According to First Precinct detectives, sometime between 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve and 2:30 a.m. New Year's Day, burglars cut a hole in the roof of the Waldbaum's at 399 Ocean Ave. and tried to break into two safes, but were unsuccessful. There were no reported proceeds.
