Murder Suspect Wants Speedy Trial

Maxwell Sherman will either be indicted Friday or apply for a release, attorneys said Wednesday.

The man accused of murdering an 18-year-old woman in Rockville Centre has asked for a speedy trial, according to prosecutors.

An attorney for Maxwell Sherman, 18, of Long Beach, asked for a quick and speedy trial Wednesday in a felony conference in Mineola.

Speaking with reporters, Garden City attorney William Petrillo did not discuss the particulars of Sherman's defense. He did say that because of "many issues" and "unanswered questions,' he believed there was a "viable and strong defense in this case."

Sherman was arrested and charged last week in the murder of 18-year-old Lauren Daverin, of Lynbrook. Before his arrest, Sherman spoke to reporters, saying he was "amazed" and "surprised" by her death.

Sherman will appear for a felony exam on Friday. At that point, if the prosecution does not indict Sherman, he can apply to be released.

"Thank you for all the kind words, hugs and love," wrote the RIP Lauren Daverin Facebook page on Tuesday. " We appreciate the support over the last few days, please keep it coming cause the next few days will be hard. Thank you."
