Crimes Nearby: Queens Man Arrested for Attempted Murder in Lynbrook

Crimes in Lynbrook:

A Queens man was arrested Monday after allegedly attempting to murder a man in Lynbrook early Sunday morning.

According Nassau County detectives, around 5:40 a.m. on Sunday, Lester Achaibar, 30, of Lindenwood, entered a residence on Rolling Street in Lynbrook, using a key, and assaulted his estranged wife’s boyfriend.

Achaibar retrieved a knife from the kitchen and slashed the 36-year-old male victim on the torso, causing a five-inch laceration, police said.

According to police, when the victim ran and locked himself in the bathroom, Achaibar fired a gunshot through the bathroom wall. The victim was not struck and Achaibar then left the residence.

Arrests

  • At 9:40 p.m. on Sept. 30, Thomas Lurie, 41, of Lynbrook, was arrested on Denton Avenue and charged with DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • At 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 2, Jonathan Augustine, 22, of Huntington Station, was arrested on Ocean Avenue and charged with aggravated DWI.

Case Reports

  • On Sept. 22, it was reported that an employee of a law firm on Merrick Road took $3,000 by issuing herself an unauthorized check for that amount.
  • On Sept. 23, it was reported that an employee of a law firm on Merrick Road took $11,350 by issuing herself unauthorized checks for various amounts.
  • According to the Lynbrook Police Department, the above case reports took place at separate locations and are not connected.

Queens Men Found With Property Stolen From Belmont Park

  • Two Queens men were arrested for Grand Larceny in Elmont Sunday. According to Nassau County Police, Sampson Ashin, 24, of Woodhaven and Sunil Singh, 36, of Jamaica, were involved in the theft of wheels and tires from new vehicles that were being stored by Bayside Chrysler Jeep Dodge at the Belmont Park parking field located in Elmont. Ashin was employed as a security guard for Arrow Security and he was paid to protect new vehicles that were being stored at the racetrack. The thefts occurred at night and the stolen property was offered for sale and sold on the Internet using Craig’s List, police say.

Burglaries

  • A home on Derrick Adkins Lane in Lakeview was burglarized on Sept. 30.
  • A Brooklyn man was arrested for a burglary that occurred in Valley Stream on Sept. 28. According to Nassau County detectives, Justin Brumell, 26, was observed by a witness entering a backyard at a residence on Charles Street. The defendant allegedly then entered the home through a rear window, took assorted jewelry and fled. Fifth Precinct Police officers located the defendant on Hookcreek Boulevard and placed him under arrest. The proceeds were recovered and upon further investigation, it was determined that the defendant had in his possession jewelry from a prior burglary that had been committed on Sept. 28 at a residence on Brookville Road.
  • The Silver Star Diner on Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square was burglarized on Oct. 3.

Grand Larcenies

  • A vehicle parked on S. Montague in Valley Stream was stolen overnight between Sept. 20 and Oct. 1.
  • Two vehicles were stolen from separate locations in Franklin Square on Oct. 2. One had been parked in front of a home on S. Scherer Boulevard and the other on New Hyde Park Road.
  • A landscaping trailer parked on New Hyde Park Road in Franklin Square was broken into between Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. Several items were reportedly taken from inside.
  • Tires and rims were removed from a vehicle parked on Thrush Avenue in Lakeview between Sept. 28 and Sept. 29. The perpetrator also caused damage to the vehicle in the process by wedging a red brick underneath the car.
  • Two men and one woman broke into a Radio Shack kiosk located at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream on Sept. 29. They shattered the glass and took several cell phones.
  • An unknown person removed various auto parts from a vehicle parked on Belpark Avenue in Elmont between Sept. 26 and Sept. 27.

Petit Larcenies

  • A bicycle was stolen from outside the 7-Eleven on Hempstead Avenue in West Hempstead on Sept. 30. Another bike was stolen later that day outside a TD Bank located on W. Merrick Road in Valley Stream.
  • A bicycle was stolen outside a McDonald’s on Franklin Avenue in Franklin Square on Oct. 1.

Larceny/Other Thefts

  • Tires and rims were stolen from vehicles parked on Morris Drive in North Valley Stream and Lucille Avenue in Elmont between Sept. 28 and Sept. 29.
  • A car radio was removed from an unlocked vehicle parked on Wilson Road in Valley Stream between Sept. 2 and Sept. 30.

Criminal Mischief

  • An unknown person shattered the passenger side window of a car parked on Maren Street in West Hempstead on Sept. 27. The driver’s side window of a vehicle parked on Arthur Avenue in South Floral Park was shattered on Oct.  2.
  • Unknown persons damaged two vehicles parked in Valley Stream between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28. One incident involved the passenger side mirror of a car parked on Franklin Avenue. The other car sustained scratches on two separate occasions while parked on Rockaway Avenue.
