Summer Weather Warning

With the temperature almost reaching triple digits last week, here are some suggestions for protecting yourself against Mother Nature.

While walking in the park this week, I realized how incredibly thirsty I was after less then ten minutes.  I headed back to my car for my water thinking that the summer weather is officially upon us!

Since the temperature was just below 100 degrees this week, I thought it was a good idea to mention something about ways we can prepare and avoid heat-related illnesses.

Recently, I explained that the reason your body sweats is to cool itself and prevent overheating. This can be very dangerous, and in extreme cases lead to death!

Infants, seniors, and those with chronic diseases are at greatest risk. The best defense against the heat is air-conditioning. If you do not have air conditioning, I suggest going to a public place, a family member or a friend’s house.

For kids or adolescents playing outdoors in the heat, either in a sports league or just in the neighborhood, will want to drink at least 16 ounces of water every hour.  Be sure to drink even if you aren’t feeling thirsty yet.

Avoid drinks containing caffeine, large amounts of sugar or alcohol.  They can cause you to lose body fluid and lead to dehydration.

Be sure to wear clothes that are light weight, and wear sunscreen. If possible, plan your outdoor activities and games in the early or later part of the day.

So, be prepared and enjoy the beautiful summer weather!
