Business Q&A: Natural Choice Health Market

A one-stop-shop for health foods, vitamins and nutritional supplements, the Natural Choice Health Market has been a staple for RVC residents for more than 20 years. This week, we spoke with owner Richard Kahn about the ins and outs of running a natural foods store. 

Tell us about the products you sell.

I sell a variety of vitamins, herbs, gluten-free products and regular food products. I have a fridge stocked with juices, though I don’t do the juicing in the store, and once a week I get new sandwiches in.

How would you describe your customer service?

It’s a small store, but I’ll get my customers what they need. For example, if someone new to the neighborhood comes in, I’ll find out what they’re interested in and then be sure to stock those products going forward so that they’ll always find what they’re looking for.

What makes RVC a good location for your store?

I think most of the people in this town are health-oriented and active. It’s a busy area and it’s very much a community. It’s nice to really get to know the people who walk through my door. Most of my customers are regulars, so when someone comes in I know exactly what they’re here for.

What is your own background in the natural foods industry?

Well, I opened this store in June 1990, so I’ve been here for 21 years now. Before I opened the store, I worked in other natural food stores for six years. I also have a business background in wholesale. I attend all of the industry trade shows and read all of the trade magazines, so I’m very well-versed what I sell.

What do you hope customers gain from their experience at Natural Choice Health Market?

I mostly want people to feel comfortable coming into my store. I also want my customers to find that what they buy has a positive effect on their lives.
