Little Leagues Set for March 9 South Shore 5K

Event to raise money for local little leagues in wake of Hurricane Sandy.

In October, Hurricane Sandy tore through the tri-state area, leaving unimaginable destruction in its path. Nowhere was the impact of this super storm felt more than on the south shore of Nassau County in communities like Long Beach, Island Park, Oceanside, East Rockaway, Freeport, Rockville Centre and Lynbrook..

Hurricane Sandy gave the residents of Nassau County its best shot and now, led by a group of little leaguers, they are ready to strike back.

On Saturday, March 9, a coalition of Little Leagues from the aforementioned South Shore communities will join forces to raise funds in hopes of offsetting the losses caused by the storm.

The South Shore 5K Run/Walk, which will begin at Oceanside Park at 9:30 a.m., will raise money for new equipment and uniforms, as well as much-needed repairs to the playing fields as a result of the storm surge.

The nine leagues involved in this fundraising effort suffered more than $250,000 in damages due to Hurricane Sandy.

“Little League plays a large role in the lives of our children,” said Jack Vobis, spokesperson for the South Shore 5K. “Our hope is that event will not only provide a measure of economic relief for the leagues, but also serve as a means to bring the communities together for a cause that will bring some normalcy to the lives of our children. The goal of Little League is instill the values of character, courage, and loyalty by engaging in friendly competition, and I cannot think of better way to demonstrate those values than to conduct an athletic event to support our leagues in their time of need.

"We hope everyone will come out and join us in supporting this worthy cause, and have some much needed fun in the process," Vobis added.

The entry fee in advance of the race is $30 and includes a t-shirt for all 5k participants. Registration on the day of the race will increase to $35. For more information, or to reserve your spot, visit www.SouthShoreRun.com.
