Cops: Oceanside Man Set Fire at Bar

An Oceanside man was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly tried to burn down a bar with people still inside, police said.

Alec Sapounas, 60, is charged with second-degree attempted arson and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Police said that on Tuesday at 8 p.m., Sapounas allegedly threw an accelerant from a container towards the rear of Phat Daddy’s Bar, located at 3116 South Long Beach Rd. in Oceanside. The rear door of the bar was open at the time and the defendant allegedly knew the bar was occupied by approximately 12 people. He allegedly proceeded to ignite the accelerant, causing a large fire in the back of the bar. No injuries were reported.
