Arrest Made in Mugging of Elderly Couple

Nassau County police have arrested an Oceanside man in connection with Wednesday night's mugging of an elderly couple in Rockville Centre.

Paul Topple, 24, was arrested and charged by police after he allegedly used the victim’s stolen credit card at several stores to make purchases. Police said they were able to identify him after reviewing video surveillance at several locations where he made purchases.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a male suspect approached an 80-year-old woman and her 83-year-old husband, who were walking in the rear parking lot of 278 Sunrise Highway.

The suspect pulled on the woman's purse and pushed her to the ground, police said. The husband attempted to chase the suspect, but tripped and fell to the ground.

Topple is being charged with robbery in the first degree, three counts of identity theft in the third degree and unlawful possession of marijuana. 

He will be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
