Temporary House for Women and Children Raises Funds in RVC

Bethany House, a temporary residence dedicated to improving the lives of homeless women and children on Long Island with a location in Baldwin, recently raised more than $14,000 at its 13th annual fashion show and awards dinner at Rockville Links Club.

“The evening was magical for all of us, our guests, our honorees, and, of course, our models,” said Sister Aimee Koonmen, the founder of Bethany House. “We are thrilled with the joy this fashion show brought our residents and former residents, and are thankful to all who helped make this evening a huge success.”

Bethany House’s five residences provide “safe, supportive, emergency housing and a comprehensive range of additional programs and resources to support families and return them to self-sufficiency,” according to a press release. Of those families who have remained at Bethany House for more than two weeks, 94 percent have successfully found permanent housing. Bethany ‘s five homes are located in Baldwin, Bellmore, and Roosevelt, and can service up to 85 persons nightly.

The event was attended by almost 200 men and women. The fashions were supplied by Chico’s of Garden City, Estelle’s Dressy Dresses of Farmingdale, and Bertalia of Rockville Centre.

Casual, business and evening attire were modeled by Bethany House residents, graduates and staff. The stores all sent representatives to help out, and one even left a note inviting a resident who was modeling their clothes to interview for a position. She got the job.
