Rockville Centre Little League Concludes 63rd Season

Rockville Centre Little League concluded its 63rd season on June 22 with a memorable “Championship Saturday “  in the baseball division and the  individual championship games in the Softball division.

Starting off the Championship Saturday were the Junior division boys’ game at Barasch Field.  The Lt. Winchester Marines took the title with a victory over St. Agnes High School Alumni.  At the awards ceremony following the game, team sponsor Marianna Winchester gave an emotional speech and presented each of the boys with a shirt honoring her son,  1st Lieutenant Ronald Winchester USMC, for whom the team is named.

Next up was the boys’ minor league all-star game at Hickey field, followed by the American League and National League championship games.  All through the day at Hickey, Little League Board members were serving complimentary hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks to players, parents and other guests in attendance.  Food and drinks were donated by Frank's Steaks and Monaghan's Irish restaurant.   In the end, Milestones in Home Care brought home the American league title while Murtagh, Cohen and Byrne won the National League.

Earlier in June, the Softball division titles were also decided.  In the minors division Art Flowers won the title and the majors division crown went to Marashinsky and Nugent.     The junior girls’ team sponsored by Frank’s Steaks completed a competitive inter-town season against other local leagues.

The youngest Little Leaguers, Mort Geller Baseball and Munchkin Softball concluded their seasons with year-end celebrations. Mort Geller with their annual all-star game and Barbeque and Munchkins with a pizza and cupcake party at the recreation center.

The Munchkin season featured new, brightly colored uniforms, a new home field at the Skelos Sports Complex and a very enthusiastic group of 6,7 and 8 year old players and parent volunteer managers and coaches.    Each participant in both leagues received trophies commemorating their play throughout the year.

All in all, it was an exciting and fun-filled season for all of the 800 kids who participate in Rockville Centre Little League.  The league is already busy planning for their fall season and their 64th year serving the youth of Rockville Center.  Details of any league programs can be found on the league’s web site, www.rvclittleleague.com.
