UPDATE: 84-Year-Old RVC Resident Fatally Struck on Merrick Road
Roads now reopened in area after Thursday morning accident.

A Rockville Centre resident was struck and killed by a car Thursday morning on Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.
According to Nassau County detectives, around 11:45 a.m., a 59-year-old male was operating a 2003 Peterbilt tractor trailer eastbound in the right lane of Merrick Road at Oceanside Road when he struck Juan Galdos, 84, of Rockville Centre.

Galdos was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Galdos was crossing Merrick Road from north to south in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. Safety checks were performed on the vehicle at the scene.

Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
Merrick Road was closed in both directions between Cumberland Street and North Long Beach Road, but reopened at 3:53 p.m. Oceanside Road was also closed between Merrick Road and Oswald Court.
