Garden City Lax Tops South Side, Advance to Semis

Trojans will play Long Beach on Wednesday.

Widely considered the best team in New York State, if not the entire country, the Garden City Trojans marched towards the Nassau County Class B semifinals with a 15-7 victory over the South Side Cyclones on Friday evening at Hofstra University.  The win hardly came without struggle for the Trojans. Ahead 8-3 late in the first half, the playoff game looked like it could be an easy one for the top seed. They had answered a late first-quarter South Side run, one that featured a Hunter Ranis goal and an athletic save by Garden City goalie Dan Marino, with four second quarter goals.  But, much like they had in the waning minutes of the first quarter, South Side struck back. Cyclones Sweep Garden City Out of Playoffs

Red-hot South Side eliminates Trojans in Nassau A quarterfinals.

The red-hot South Side Cyclones swept the Garden City Trojans out of the Class A quarterfinals on Thursday with a 2-1 win behind a dominant performance by Cyclones ace Christian Colletti. No. 3 seed South Side entered the playoff matchup on an 11-game win streak, including a a first-round playoff win over Bethpage. On Wednesday, the Trojans cruised to an early 10-2 lead only to see it vanish when South Side exploded in a 12-run fifth inning to take a 1-0 series. Down 1-0 in the best of three series on Thursday, Garden City had its backs to the wall and needed an outstanding team effort to climb back in it. Molloy Sophomore Wins Long Island Half-Marathon

Cross country runner Nick Filippazzo finishes 13.1 mile race in 1:09:24.

Molloy College sophomore and cross-country runner Nick Filippazzo captured the Long Island Half-Marathon title Sunday. Filippazzo, 19, finished the 13.1 mile race with a time of 1:09:24. He edged out second place finisher Charles White of Kingwood, Texas by six seconds.  The race kicked off on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Uniondale and took runners north into Westbury before heading south on the Wantagh State Parkway and finishing at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. The Wantagh High School graduate is coming off a successful cross country season at Molloy in Rockville Centre where he earned All-Region honors after coming in ninth place at the NCAA Regional Championships. Cyclones Baseball Wins A-II Conference

South Side topped Roslyn 10-3 to claim the title.

The South Side Cyclones were crowned Conference A-II champions on Monday after beating Roslyn, 10-3. Christian Colletti picked up the win giving up one run over five innings with eight strikeouts. Eddie Tommaro connected for his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Ben Hoefer also had a great game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. The playoff seedings and schedule will be announced Thursday.

Cyclones Baseball Sweeps Division in Three-Game Set

Sweep and eight-game win streak puts South Side atop their division.

Game 1 — The Cyclones pounded out 19 hits in a 13-4 win. The Cyclones got off to a fast start, scoring 11 runs in the second inning. Ben Hoefer had a monster game, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. Ben Felderstein also provided some production of his own, going 3-for-3 with a bases-loaded single that broke the game open. Christian Colletti picked up the win, going 5.1 innings while giving up one run and striking out eight. Game 2 — Mike Schuermann went the distance, as the Cyclones knocked off Division, 6-4. Schuermann pick up his second win of the season with a complete game. In those seven innings, he gave up four runs and struck out five. VIDEO: Molloy Lion Played Lax with a Blind Eye

Molloy College student story was featured on a Hofstra student-run news program.

A Molloy College lacrosse-playing exploits were recently featured on a Hofstra student-run news program. Brian Farley is no ordinary athlete. The Molloy senior is playing at the Division II level despite being blind in one eye. According to the Long Island Report, Farley started playing lacrosse while he was a sophomore at Division Avenue High School in Levittown. He was recruited to Molloy and has five goals and one assist in his senior season. Farley graduated from Molloy in December and, according to the Long Island Report, plans on working in financial analysis after his senior season. The video was produced by Hofstra student Kevin Dexter for the School of Communications program's news journal show "Hofstra News Now."

Gallagher Matthews Wins RVC Over 40 Hoops League

League players and sponsors raised $7,500 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Rockville Centre Over 40 Basketball League wrapped up its 2012 season on April 26, and Gallagher Matthews were crowned league champions.  The league is in its 20th year and had 120 players participating this year. The league players and sponsors raised $7,500 for the Wounded Warrior Project.  Participation in the Over 40 Basketball League is open to all Rockville Centre residents who will be 40 by Jan. 1, 2013.  Registration is held in the fall at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center.   Information in this article was provided by Bill Faraday and Trustee Ed Oppenheimer.

Cyclones Complete Three-Game Sweep of Hewlett

South Side outscored Hewlett in the final two games, 16-6.

The Cyclones took game two of its series against the Hewlett Bulldogs, 11-5. Pitcher Mike Schuermann picked up his first win of the season. He tossed five innings and allowed five runs (only one was earned). Joel Ramirez slammed the door in relief, pitching two clean innings. Ed Farington led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. David Hawley also chimed in with two hits and picked up two RBI. The Cyclones got off to a rocky start defensively, making six errors in the first three innings, but settled down to secure the win. In the third game of the series, the Cyclones won 5-1. RVC Over 40 Hoops League Championship Tonight

The championship game will be played at the recreation center at 8:30 p.m.

The Rockville Centre Over 40 Basketball League will play its 2012 Championship game tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center, located at 111 North Oceanside Road.  Representatives of the Wounded Warrior Project will be present to accept a donation from the Over 40 League players.

SSHS Athlete of the Week: Christian Colletti

Senior southpaw hurler whiffs 15 batters in a 12-2 win over Lawrence.

Senior ace of the South Side Cyclones starting rotation, Christian Colletti, has gotten off to a scorching start this season, and baseball aficionados around Nassau County and even those in Major League Baseball have taken notice. The southpaw is 3-0 with an Earned Run Average around 1.00 and is coming off a start where he fanned 15 batters in five innings while throwing only 85 pitches. Every out he recorded came via the strikeout, and the senior ace said it was the first time this season he's felt so locked in. "It's nice when you have every pitch working," he said. "It's just you and the batter. There's nothing else distracting you." Colletti went to a full count on only two batters in his masterful 15-strikeout performance, and racked …
