Cyclones Sweep Garden City Out of Playoffs

Red-hot South Side eliminates Trojans in Nassau A quarterfinals.

The red-hot South Side Cyclones swept the Garden City Trojans out of the Class A quarterfinals on Thursday with a 2-1 win behind a dominant performance by Cyclones ace Christian Colletti. No. 3 seed South Side entered the playoff matchup on an 11-game win streak, including a a first-round playoff win over Bethpage. On Wednesday, the Trojans cruised to an early 10-2 lead only to see it vanish when South Side exploded in a 12-run fifth inning to take a 1-0 series. Down 1-0 in the best of three series on Thursday, Garden City had its backs to the wall and needed an outstanding team effort to climb back in it. Dion, Masin Reelected to Board of Education

Two incumbents receive 3,758 total votes.

Board of Education incumbents Liz Dion and Mark Masin were reelected to the Board of Education on Tuesday night. Both candidates ran unopposed, with Dion receiving 1,911 votes and Masin garnering 1,847. Dion, who serves as the board's president and is entering her fourth year on the board, said her goal remains the same. "I want to maintain the excellence in education that our community comes to expect and we expect, and continue doing it within budget limitations," she said. Masin, who is the longest tenured board member with nine years of service, echoed Dion's sentiments. "I want to make sure we continue progressing forward in our quest to provide a dynamic education for our kids," Masin said.

RVC Residents Approve 2012-13 School Budget

1,940 residents voted for the $97,260,488 fiscal plan.

The 2012-13 proposed $97.2 million school budget passed on Tuesday night, with 1,940 voting for the fiscal plan and 888 voting against it.  The 2012-13 budget, which stayed under the two percent tax cap with a 1.99 percent tax levy increase, received 68 percent of the vote. By law, it needed 50 percent to pass. The fiscal plan is a 1.67 percent increase over this year's budget and will raise the average Rockville Centre homeowners' school taxes by $120. Through re-negotiations with some of the district's seven bargaining units, the district constructed a fiscal plan that stayed under the cap. All programs and services will remain intact, school officials said, and teacher positions will be safe for the next two years (2012-13, 2013-14 …

Here's everything you'll need to know to before you vote on the school budget.

The Rockville Centre Board of Education adopted its 2012-13 budget on April 17, a $97,260,488 fiscal plan that if passed today will increase the average Rockville Centre homeowners' school taxes by $120. Residents can vote on the budget, as well as two Board of Education seats, at South Side HS between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. BOE President Liz Dion and Trustee Mark Masin are both running unopposed for their seats. 2012-13 School Budget Vote: What You Need to Know

The proposed fiscal plan has a 1.99 tax levy increase and if passed, will increase the average homeowners' taxes by $120.

The Rockville Centre Board of Education adopted its 2012-13 budget on April 17, a $97,260,488 fiscal plan that if passed on May 15 will increase the average Rockville Centre homeowners' school taxes by $120. After some of the district's seven bargaining units renegotiated their contracts to help avoid layoffs and program cuts, school officials constructed a fiscal plan that stayed within the new two percent tax cap. The 2012-13 budget is a 1.67 percent increase over the current plan and contains a 1.99 tax levy increase. Bartels said the $120 increase in school taxes is based on Nassau County's assessment of the average home in RVC, which is $532,000. He said that number is down seven percent from last year. Family Fun Day at SSHS Junior Carnival

Juniors raise money for prom and class gift with afternoon of fun.

The South Side High School class of 2013 could not have asked for a better afternoon. A warm, sun splashed Saturday acted as a perfect back drop for the annual Junior Carnival on the Hewitt Elementary School lawn. Proceeds from the event help to fund next year’s senior prom and the class’ end-of-year gift to their soon-to-be alma mater.   “The Junior Carnival is our biggest fundraiser,” Junior Class President Michael Garcia said. “All of the juniors in our grade (put together) a booth. It’s really fun.” There were no shortage of options for attendees who roamed the spacious lawn. Hispanic Brotherhood of RVC Hosts Annual Scholarship Gala

Four worthy high school seniors received $1,000 college scholarships.

Four worthy, hard-working local high school seniors of Hispanic descent were honored by the Hispanic Brotherhood Society of Rockville Centre with $1,000 college scholarships. South Side High School seniors Richard and Leandro Castillo and Nathaniel Cabrera were honored at the gala, along with Oceanside High School senior Nahomy Acevedo. RVC Editor Anthony Bottan presented plaques to Castillo and Acevedo, as he was a past recipient of the Brotherhood's college scholarship.

Cyclones Baseball Wins A-II Conference

South Side topped Roslyn 10-3 to claim the title.

The South Side Cyclones were crowned Conference A-II champions on Monday after beating Roslyn, 10-3. Christian Colletti picked up the win giving up one run over five innings with eight strikeouts. Eddie Tommaro connected for his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Ben Hoefer also had a great game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. The playoff seedings and schedule will be announced Thursday.
