Crime Watch Part Two: ID Theft Strikes RVC Residents

Recent police activity as reported by the RVC PD.

Unusual Incident: On May 7 at 7:50 a.m., a complainant from North Drive in Seaford reported that while grinding a tree stump in front of 495 Merrick Road in Rockville Centre, he struck a gas line resulting in a strong odor of gas. RCPD, RCFD, RC Building Department and National Grid personnel responded to scene. On May 12 at 3:45 p.m., a complainant from Hamilton Street in Rockville Centre reported that between May 9 at 2:30 p.m. and May 10, unknown person(s) attempted to cash a fraudulent check against a Chase checking account and open up two credit cards in his name without authorization. Arrest: On May 7 at 6:38 p.m., Joseph Epstein, 58, of Freeport, was arrested for driving while intoxicated following an accident investigation by police personnel on Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre. Cedarhurst Man Arrested for Gang Assault A Cedarhurst man was arrested on May 7 after he allegedly beat and robbed a 48-year-old in Roosevelt in March, police said. Artawon Wright, 18, of Cedarhurst, was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, first-degree gang assault, second-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal mischief. Rockville Centre resident arrested after three-month investigation.

Suffolk County Police arrested a Rockville Centre resident and West Babylon pizzeria owner Tuesday who was allegedly selling illegal prescription pills out of his restaurant. According to police, First Squad detectives, in conjunction with officers from the First Precinct Community Oriented Police Enforcement (COPE) Section, completed a three-month investigation into the illegal sale of prescription drugs at Miceli Brothers Pizzeria and Restaurant Tuesday evening. Larceny: On April 24 at 2:20 a.m., a complainant from Andover Road in Rockville Centre reported that sometime between April 23 at 10 p.m. and April 24 at 2 a.m., unknown person(s) stole four wheels and tire rims valued at $9,200 from his 2013 Nissan GT-R parked in his driveway. Gas Main Bursts on Merrick Road

Fire department evacuated the surrounding area; National Grid repaired the gas line.

A gas main in front of 495 Merrick Road ruptured early Monday morning after a tree-trimming company tried to grind a stump and accidentally hit the gas line, officials said. According to Rockville Centre Fire Department Chief John Busching, officials arrived at the scene at 7:55 a.m. and quickly evacuated the surrounding homes and businesses. Busching said the danger was if the leaking gas ignited, it would have sparked a fire. Officials said National Grid got to the broken line within ten minutes, turned off the gas, dug up the main and replaced it. Merrick Road was closed both ways for about a half hour, Busching said. Evacuees were allowed to return to their offices and homes within 30 minutes, officials said, and there were no injuries…
