At Sacred Hearts, Remembering RVC Native Monsignor Trench

The iconic church's late pastor, who died last weekend, will be laid to rest on Friday.

Suzanne Marchisella nearly cried.  But the secretary at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church took a deep breath and laughed instead. Rev. Monsignor Edmond J. Trench, the revered former leader of the church, wouldn't have had it any other way. "I can't cry. He was full of joy," said Marchisella, who has worked at the church since Monsignor Trench hired her in 1989. "He embraced everyone. Anyone who needed to talk to him could talk to him." So the outpouring of emotion after he died Saturday at Southampton Hospital comes as no surprise to Marchisella, whose phone at the rectory has been ringing nearly non-stop. Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs, 56, Dies

News spreads across the world about Jobs' death.

One month after stepping down as chief executive, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has passed away. The New York Times reported: Mr. Jobs stepped down from the chief executive role in late August, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties, and became chairman. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004, and received a liver transplant in 2009. In a statement, Apple said “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. Bob Bigelow, 71, Iconic South Side Coach

South Side's Bob Bigelow taught for 32 years, won 10 state titles in girls soccer and four Nassau crowns in boys basketball.

Bob Bigelow, one of the most accomplished high school coaches in state history and an iconic figure at South Side High School, has died.  Bigelow, who received a lung transplant last August, died Saturday from related complications at a hospital in Montclair, N.J. He was 71. Coach Bigs, as players called him, taught physical education and coached at South Side for 32 years. He won 330 games and 10 state titles in 21 seasons as the South Side girls soccer coach. Bigelow retired after the 2001 season, which ended with a 20-0 mark, a state Class A title, mythical national championship and National Soccer Coaches Association of America coach of the year award (he first earned the honor in 1994).  His .864 winning percentage ranks 17th all-time…

Video: Nassau Police Honor Fallen Officer

An army in blue showed up in Selden Thursday for the viewing of fallen Nassau County Police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf.

Thousands of police officers in dress blue uniforms lined up outside the Selden Fire Department Thursday evening to pay tribute to fallen Nassau County police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf. Breitkopf, 40, a decorated veteran of the elite Bureau of Special Operations, was accidentally shot and killed Saturday by an MTA officer while responding to a call in Massapequa Park. He also was a volunteer firefighter in Selden, where he lived with his wife and two children. Among those on hand for Thursday services were Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. Services for Breitkopf will be held Friday at St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church, located at 81 College Road in Selden, beginning at 12:30 p.m. …

A condensed look at this week's news.

As the new week approaches, let's look back at some of the stories featured on Rockville Centre Patch. In school news, South Side High School's James Rodriguez and Steve Meoli finished in second place in their respective weight classes during the Sprig Gardner wrestling tourney. The boy's basketball team lost to Newburgh Free Academy during the Upstate/Downstate Challenge at Uniondale High School.
