What's the point? Johnson and his puppet crew will get what they want. They scare the PTA and allRead More the school age parents to vote yes. If they miss the budget they get another shot and if that fails they will float another bond... The only solution is to try and get the no votes to the polls. LOL. There are many complainers here in RVC however when its time to vote they remain on there couch. A change in the rubber stamp school board would be nice however the PTA and company will vote for O' Shea a good person however just a rubber stamp. A group has to form to rally and pick up there voters, and not just seniors but people who can think for themselves.

I know it is too late for tomorrow but had anyone checked to see how many administrators,Read More asst.administrators, asst. Superintrndants, aides and non teaching staff we have in RVC and what the numbers ($) are against the actual teaching staff for such a small student population? Everyone's afraid to take on the board of Ed and the administrators. Can anyone spell Syosset?
Chris May 22, 2013 at 11:49 pm
3500 out of 24000 voted. That isn't something for either side to crow about.

What about the Library Budget and Candidate Results?
Bobep34 May 21, 2013 at 02:09 pm
In an over bloated school budget, how many non teaching staff including administrators are on theRead More citizens payroll? For a district our student size, how many assistant superintendents do we need or can we afford?
Ellen May 19, 2013 at 12:25 pm
Ms. Rubino, I do not understand how you can expect people to take your candidacy seriously when youRead More will not state your position on the budget which will be voted on this Tuesday. I am puzzled that you state that you will be accountable to residents yet persistently avoid presenting your position on the single most important issue facing you if you are to become a candidate. You may state that you do not use scare tactics but what scares me is that you are unwilling to make a simple statement of yes or no on the most important issue facing your candidacy. I am inclined to support a new candidate but can not if I do not know your position. Frankly, as a candidate it is irresponsible for you to avoid this issue. I echo the previous comment --- Please respond asap.
RVCLongIslander May 18, 2013 at 08:27 pm
Mrs. Rubino, what is your position on the school budget seeing as the vote is this Tuesday? HaveRead More you made up your mind yet? Please respond asap. Thanks!

Matthew, The US News and Newsweek high school rankings came out a few days ago and just in case youRead More are wondering why no press release from the district its because we are #312 in the country in Newsweek's rankings and #117 in US News ranking (#20 in New York State). Last year we were #22 in the nation and #2 in the state. I believe they may have included test score results this year (our AP scores are below and average of 2) which may explain why we have dropped down so dramatically. Now Matthew, I don't want to tell you how to do your job but it would seem to me that you should do a story on this prior to the BOE election. Don't wait for a press release from the district. Its not coming.

Sounds like Johnson and company are getting ready for poor grades! Protecting themselves for thereRead More next budget vote. What else is new?
Fred Stapleman May 9, 2013 at 02:21 pm
You should be proud of your kids. I hope they continue to do well. I have kids also in 1st gradeRead More and kindergarten so not testing yet. However the question I am asking is what is the district trying to hide? Dr Johnson is not going in any way, shape or form going to end this testing in NYS w/ his little protest. The fact that the Johnson administration is "disturbed" by the testing and feel the assessments are "problematic" and that testing shows what kids don't know rather than what they do know and is to lengthy is their opinion. That all being said right or wrong is is irrelevant as far as measuring our kids abilities against other districts in NYS based on identical testing. As I stated earlier these tests are uniform across the state. If kids in other districts are scoring well above the kids in RVC on the same test then there would seem to be a problem as all districts should be following the same core curriculum. Again why does the Johnson administration continue to boost of Southsides 4th and 22nd national rankings and bury the fact that based on identical tests given throughout the state with all the vairables taken out such as free lunch and other non-academic measures Southside in ranked 508 in NYS. Its the same test!!! If RVC is doing such a great job why does it not reflect in our students test scores as compared w/ the scholastic abilities of students in other districts. Once again the material is the same statewide. Attacking the test is simply an attempt at justifying why our kids are not performing as well as kids in other districts.

@Observer, I could't agree with you more.

Been there ... Just curious where has a PTA president endorsed a candidate. Just wondering whichRead More PTA president endorsed which candidate for the BOE?. Also, the entire budget is a public document easily accessible for anyone interested enough to review it. Nobody needs to "receive" it. No big secret there.
CP3PO May 5, 2013 at 08:07 pm
I'm looking forward to finally having a school board member that reviews the budget line by line andRead More tries to make fiscally responsible decisions. Mrs. Rubino is a breath of fresh air. Too many rubber stampers on the Board currently have been the cause of our taxes skyrocketing out of control without any accountability or responsibility on the part of the school administration.

@Rvcmother - I guess you missed my announcement I posted on patch? What makes you think that she isRead More not hand picked ? She praised Dr Johnson and all the work that he has done for the schools at last nights forum. If you missed it, the PTA (which you seem to question) had the district record it and will be playing it on the school TV Channel. What makes her a viable candidate? The already have a CPA on the, why do they need another? She had the same answer for almost every question last night and that tells me that someone is controlling her!
rvcmother May 1, 2013 at 10:44 am
Don't you find it odd, Matthew, that we finally have a viable candidate for the BOE...a candidateRead More not handpicked by Dr. Johnson and the district didn't even announce last night's forum on your website? If I were you, Matthew, I would feel duped by the district. I mean they send you every insignificant press release but something as important as let's say democracy at work is ignored by the district and they have managed to make you their partner in deception. The "fourth estate" has taken a hit today Matthew.

There is a candidates forum tomorrow night at the middle school at 7:30 for the board of edRead More election. Shouldn't the Patch be making this announcement?

Yes Deirdre really, bobbleheaded drones or Johnson/Burris minions if you prefer. The PTA andRead More current administration go out of their way to preach the virtures of RVC schools and Southsides "national ranking". Not once do you ever hear of delapidated schools, overcrowding, poor athletic fields, safety issues etc until they are looking to pass a 45 millionish bond on backs of the taxpayers. At which point they use childern on the front lines both literally and figuratively as props to further their argument. These are all issues that should have been addressed by this administration on a yearly basis and kept up with out of the operating budgets. When it comes out that RVC can't crack the top 500 in testing in NYS what do Johnson/Burris and the bobbleheaded drones do? They put the arm on parents and kids to "opt out" of that very same testing. Testing that virtually evey district in NYS and around the country conform to. Its called national standards. What are they trying to hide? You talk about "petty attacks". Have you ever heard how the card carrying members of the PTA speak of, shun and mark the families of this village who actually have their own opinion? Just because I have an opinion that differs from yours you paint me as angry and divisive. Who's name calling now? Deirdre, a mind is a terrible thing to waste as the saying goes. Wake up, do a little research, stop drinking the Johnson/Burris/PTA KoolAid and form your own opinions. BTW this country needs a bit of divisiveness. We don't all feel the need to go along to get along. It's called the two party system amoungst other things and has worked out fairly well so far.
Deirdre April 24, 2013 at 09:23 am
No need for name calling, Fred Stapleman. You undermine your argument when you resort to pettyRead More attacks on community volunteers. Bobbleheaded drones? Really? What good does that serve you? You are an example of the anger and divisiveness that does this country no good at all.
beentheredonethat April 23, 2013 at 02:59 pm
Rather than make the school look good, this latest press release from the district (btw how much areRead More we paying our media spokesperson) just proves what everyone is saying all along. The Ponzi scheme analogy is on point. Put more bodies in the seats to take the tests and ignore the test results. Is Burris going to commission another plaque to put on the wall at the high school to advertise this empty accolade?
Ted David April 21, 2013 at 12:46 am
Just how long is it going to take before one of our RVC fellow taxpayers who's a lawyer figures outRead More a way to sue Johnson for malfeasance, breach of contract and force him out. He has to go. We all know it. Who will fire the first salvo?
rvcmother April 19, 2013 at 01:21 pm
Johnson & Burris were the leaders in the opt out movement. Sadly for them the rest of the stateRead More did not follow which puts us further at risk with the State in terms of financial consequences. Respecting family decisions? Give me a break. These two did their level best to encourage parents to opt out. The reason they are so against the testing? Because these tests are sent out for scoring! They fear legitimate score results. The educational Ponzi scheme begins to crumble.
Fred Stapleman April 19, 2013 at 10:02 am
Why would we want our childern to be on par with every other kid in the state and country? Its badRead More enough Southside HS is ranked #508 in New York State now this buffone superintendent wants to opt out of the only standard to measure how well our kids are doing and how well they will be able to compete against kids from around the nation when they reach college. Most districts around the country are currently testing as required and not calling for their students to opt out. What is Johnson trying to hide? On a positive note he states "the school district would respect the decisions of families" there's a first. I wonder how long that will last? When is this guys contract up?
Marc April 18, 2013 at 02:06 pm
Yeah...a real surprise from Johnson's sycophants...

How does the principal of a school ranked 508 in New York State wind up winning principal of theRead More year honors?

Patch. Why are you not reporting school districts that have opted out of giving the stateRead More assessments?
Shellbanker April 12, 2013 at 01:43 pm
Letdown, Rvcmom, Ted, Insider, etc..how could we have let something like this happen in ourRead More village?! Hold on, wait for it.......Its ALL Dr. Johnsons fault isn't it?! 250 comments about our overpaid super, yet only one comment about the state selecting Dr. Burris as principal of the year. Congrats Dr. Burris well deserved, and by the way that was an excellent piece in the Washington post a few weeks ago. My wife (inner city grade school teacher) and I agree whole heartedly with your viewpoints..
