In light of this clarification, I would like to retract my statement and make a sincere apology forRead More my previous uninformed comment. I would strongly urge you though to submit a letter to the editor to make these facts known throughout the community so others who are not fully aware do not make the same grossly out-of-line comments or worse in the near future. You are clearly not the norm. Unfortunately, thanks to media like Newsday and other sources public unions on Long Island have all been painted with the same brush. I am not the only one who makes these types of assumptions due to lack of specific information pertaining to each union. Thank you again for your quick, and undeserved, respectful response to my earlier comment. Your union should be proud to have you as President.

As President of the Rockville Centre Public Library CSEA Unit I would like to address the commentsRead More made by Merrick7. First, the Library Board made the decision to close on Sundays without any input from the union or any other staff. The board has the power to make such a decision without consulting us. Second, our union members make low salaries. We do not have parity with our counterparts in other Nassau County libraries and have been working to gain parity. However, the administrators in our building have enjoyed parity with their counterparts for quite a number of years. Third, our work week is Monday through Saturday. Sundays are optional. Our contract does state, however, if Sundays are understaffed, the administration has the right to press us into service up to two times per year. We do not want to close Sundays and I, myself, attended the Budget Hearing and Candidates’ Forum last night and spoke out about cost-saving measures the board could take to save Sundays. I hope this clarifies the issue. – Alene Scoblete, RVCPL CSEA Unit President
