I love how they use a ten year old photo of the old fart. Yeah, she'll be fantastic as president,Read More just look at how good a job she did as Secretary of State. The Russian Reset is great, Libya turned out fantastic, the mid-east peace process is humming along, Syria is awesome, backing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt really worked and boy nobody flew more miles than her. Hillary really rocks the pant suit and the spokesperson from the State Department could not name one tangible success from her turn as Secretary of State. But yeah Derrick, she'll be one of our finest presidents.
Scott Peterson April 23, 2014 at 12:36 pm
In light of the divisiveness the Former Sec State imparts, her running would be counter productiveRead More to easing tension in a polarized electorate for no appreciable gain. Maybe instead of hiring the old tried and true, we are in need of something completely new. After all, the old tried and true is how we came to be where we are. In light of the apparent discontent with the system as displayed among the population, there seems to be the basis for agreement that where we are leaves a lot to be desired. I would never presume to suggest whom one should vote for, I do however presume to say that unless honestly considering the options without regard to bias, casting the vote does more harm than good. Need evidence, watch our City Council members vote on issues of which they have no real understanding. When asked about an issue they were to vote on, the City Planner had to rescue the Council by saying that the confused looks on their faces means he should explain it. I knew the answer before I asked the question, I was merely testing the understanding of those who were to decide the issue. Being unable to articulate the issue in their own words gave the appearance that those whom decide the fate of the rest of us had little if any idea what they were voting on. That there is a video record of the exchange suggests that the future may be able look back and laugh or cry depending on how that future turns out to be perceived by those living with the results of the votes cast today.

Eugene Falik April 23, 2014 at 10:38 am
It is truly shocking to see the "know nothing" nonsense displayed here. This article justRead More seems like an excuse for every nut to rattle about his/her own pet peeves. And what is more amazing to me, is that those who seem to take the most "conservative" or right-wing positions are most exercised about one of the most blatant atempts at intruding on students' personal liberty that we have seen in a good many years. For those who don't know what it was, inBloom would have put students' most personal information out on the Internet for any hacker, or corporate data miner to see.
eatingdogfood April 23, 2014 at 12:56 pm
Mr Falik, I think we all got the gist of the article. But problems with public education go wayRead More beyond dropping inbloom. That is a drop in the bucket.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:44 am
Let me say something as a graduate of the University of Michigan, who had the tougher road toRead More admission as a non-resident. The problem with affirmative action is how to quantify it. Michigan can have its pick of students from the elite private and public schools in and around Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Schools in Detroit certainly don't offer the educational opportunities that a school like Detroit Country day, or public high schools elite suburbs like Winnetka, Illinois or Bethesda, Maryland do. But, is a kid from a very rural area in the U.P. any more prepared for U of M than a kid from Detroit? By the same token, a kid from a farm outside of Muskegon represents the same kind of diversity to a kid from Westchester County, New York as someone from Detroit.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:59 am
Observor, It may have been Walt Williams who said that the problem with affirmative action is thatRead More it can set up a kid to fail. Schools that serve large groups of minorities often do not prepare a kid for an elite school, whehter it's a private school like Harvard or Duke, or an elite public school like Michigan or Cal-Berkeley. He suggested that a student, regardless of race or color, should always select a school that is suited to his qualifications. Someone from an inner-city school in California would be better off going to a university in the California State University system, rather than a school in the University of California system. The idea is that he can succeed in college and move on to a successful career. If a person ill-prepared for Berkeley or UCLA attends either of those schools, he has a greater likelihood of flunking out and giving up on higher education. My father attended a 1-room school house until the 6th grade. He then attended a rural junior high and high school. He wound up going to a land-grant university 11 years after graduating from high school, courtesy of the GI Bill. Because of his going to a school that, while good in the field of agriculture, was an average university overall, he was able to move into management eventually transferred to Chicago. So, I attended a very good suburban high school that prepared me for the University of Michigan. If he had gone to a school for which he wasn't prepared, he could very well have dropped out, which would have meant no management opportunity or transfer to Chicago. I know a lot of very successful people who went to small, liberal arts colleges or public universities that aren't of the same caliber as Michigan, UCLA, or the University of Illinois. Yes, going to a school like Michigan, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford can lead to great opportunities. But, going to a non-elite college or university doesn't close the doors on those opportunities.
"The Black Panther of Poetry" April 23, 2014 at 01:02 pm
Fair is Fair!!! Now if we can only get Affirmative Action totally out of such sports as BasketballRead More and Football and the others, where the minority there is truly and obviously inferior but yet is given a shoe in because his race promotes, finance and overly spectates in these Professions.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 12:58 pm
I read every single link on the Common Core website, and there is virtually NO information on it. ItRead More says that the Common core was developed by the State Governpor... not federally funded. You can search all you want ont the CC website, and you will never find the list of people that Steven Lee gave you above. It does not disclose how the development of these sandards was funded, and by whom. It SAYS educators were involved. So you believe that, and it is enough for you. I does NOT disclose how federal funds ARE being used to prod states into accepting the CC standards. It is a PR website, and nothing more. If I am skeptical about something, I try to find unaffiliated sources of information. And I read editorials pro and con. And I read the skeptics, and fact-check. I immediatly rule out any post mentioning "illuminati", aliens, eugenics, or that seems blatantly racist or otherwise extreme. But I also have to say that although I allow that you have a different point of view, I can't say that you have provided me with any reasonable "facts" that I can follow up on. So you are welcome to your opinion, but I don't find it a helpful or persuasive one.
CowDung April 23, 2014 at 01:00 pm
" It says that the Common core was developed by the State Governpor... " Apparently youRead More missed this: "The Common Core State Standards drafting process relied on teachers and standards experts from across the country. Teachers were involved in the development process in four ways: 1) They served on the Work Groups and Feedback Groups for the ELA and math standards. 2) The National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), among other organizations were instrumental in bringing together teachers to provide specific, constructive feedback on the standards 3) Teachers were members of teams states convened to provide regular feedback on drafts of the standards. 4) Teachers provided input on the Common Core State Standards during the two public comment periods."

Should plastic bags be a thing of the past?
Carolina Lewiston April 23, 2014 at 10:40 am
Costco items are bulky and heavy. They cannot fit in plastic bags without ripping instantly. I doRead More not need to carry reusable bags with me. There are plenty of "recycle your plastic bags here" bins that can be used. Its another way for stores to make money by charging you for reusable bags and soon plastic bags. Ikea does the same thing and forces you to buy their blue bags.
CAPICU April 23, 2014 at 11:14 am
OMG I can't believe this; I just saw a plastic bag, float across my office window. It mocked me forRead More a few seconds, as it nonchalantly hovered in midair, taunting me with its bag like features. And just as it came, it quickly vanished from my view. It’s probably hovering its way.... to its next victim.

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Massa April 23, 2014 at 11:39 am
It makes me sick that these clowns steal and vandalize property that we all work hard for, but itRead More pisses me off even more that I don't see anything being done about it. I know we are all getting sick and tired of living in a county that has the highest taxes in the Country.I am getting real sick of getting crap service for our tax dollars. Nassau PD needs to get some real supervisors and get their police officers on the ball. First thing is real roll calls at police precincts. second is no more free meals where guys take advantage of businesses, I see these guys all the time at these places and don't pay a cent, sounds like corruption to me. Third is no more police booths or hanging out in firehouses.... WTF is that all about? Nassau firehouses have bars in them. The three cars hanging out bullshitting for hours has to stop.thugs are committing crimes and nothing is getting done. As far as dangerous precincts in Nassau, I will say the 1st and 5th are busy and have the most danger. Those officers should get the respect they deserve. It is sad that the other precincts don't give the community that they serve the respect they deserve.Walking in the door and making 150.000 dollars a year without overtime is pretty nice for the area's they work.I am sure city guys would take the city salary to work with less danger in nice areas everyday.

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't.
