Whiz Kids: Alison Bartoldus and Dana Glick Receive Girl Scout Gold Awards

The SSHS students were recognized for their service to the community.

More than 80 members of the Rockville Centre community gathered at the Central Synagogue of Nassau County on Sunday for the Rockville Centre Association of Girl Scouts’ Annual Awards Ceremony. Fourth through twelfth graders were honored for their community service projects, including SSHS students Alison Bartoldus and Dana Glick, who earned the Girl Scouts’ top honor — the Gold Award.

Amy Slavin, the awards ceremony chair and leader of high school Troop 834, said that Sunday’s event marked Rockville Centre’s fourth annual Association Awards Ceremony. She also explained that everyone involved with the ceremony — and with scouting in general — is a volunteer.

“I started this to honor Girl Scouts in our community with an event they could be proud to attend,” Slavin said. “Since Boy Scouts have an impressive Eagle Court of Honor upon earning their Eagle Scout rank, I believed it was important for Girl Scouts earning their Gold Awards to have the same level of honor with a dignified ceremony and celebration.”

Bartoldus, who has been a Girl Scout for eight years, said she was “excited and honored” when she found out that she would receive the Gold Award.

To earn her nomination, Bartoldus painted an educational mural for the Pre-K, kindergarten and first grade classes at the Chinese Center in West Hempstead. “I also attend Mandarin language classes, traditional Chinese dance classes, plus I help lead the Lion Dance Troupe and I'm on the Dragon Boat team there,” said Bartoldus about her involvement at the Center.

Glick, Rockville Centre’s other Gold Award recipient, focused on teaching children in elementary school about nutrition for her service project. Glick, who has been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten said, “I was very proud of myself for achieving this honor, but it was secondary to being able to create a change in my community.”

Both Bartoldus and Glick will be recognized once again for their Gold Awards in a county-wide award ceremony that will take place in New Hyde Park on June 12.
