Maple Pointe 'Bowls For Breasts'

Village's assisted living center hosts tourney to fundraise for breast cancer research.

Maple Pointe Assisted Living hosted its inaugural "Bowling for Breasts" charity bowl-a-thon Thursday at RVC Lanes, raising $7,500 for breast cancer research. The bowling tournament featured 11 teams comprised of vendors throughout the village, a 50/50 raffle and trophies for the winners.

“We’ve been raising money for charity for two years now,” said Tammy Marshall, executive director at Maple Pointe. “We had a lot of success with our 'Wing Off' last October, and we wanted to continue this season with another fun event.”

But why bowling?

“It seemed like something fun to do, and 'Bowling for Breasts' was a catchy little phrase we could work with,” Marshall said.

Maple Pointe teamed up with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline to host the event. Registration was $500 per team, and $100 per person. All proceeds went to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Support Program, and RVC Lanes plans to continue raising money thorughout the week with a 50/50 to help reach the $10,000 goal.

Some of the raffle prizes included Yankees tickets, a grill kit, a Margarita basket, and an all-pink alcohol basket to go along with the theme.

Andrea Rivette, director of activities at Maple Pointe, said that the event drew a ton of support from village residents.

"We had to split some organizations into two separate teams because we had so many people register for the tournament,” Rivette said. “All the different teams of local businesses give this event a real community feel.”

Joan Hearns, case manager at Maple Pointe in the Country Cottage Alzheimer’s Unit, bowled a spare before explaining some of the planning details.

“We started planning for this three months ago, branching out to all the different vendors we could think of,” Hearns said. “We wanted to do something for this cause, bringing awareness to young ladies for screenings and getting themselves checked. Everyone was extremely supportive; some organizations just sent checks, doing whatever they could do to support us.”

Maple Pointe is hosting a Pina Colada night coming up on June 16.
