Lions Club Partners With Youth Council on Food Drive

Groups collect 12 boxes of canned goods.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, village residents should not forget about the hundreds of families in Rockville Centre who go hungry during this time of giving. Fortunately, Rockville Centre residents didn't forget, as they donated 12 crates of non-perishable canned and dry goods during a collaborative food drive held by the Lions Club and the RVC Youth Council on Sunday at King Kullen.

Ed Asip, president of the Lions Club, said that the response from the community was great, and that all the food collected — enough to fill two SUV's — will be given to Tony Brunetta of the , who will then distribute the food to needy Rockville Centre families. "We had it for one day, for four hours, and we collected 12 boxes of canned and dry goods," Asip said. "King Kullen patrons are always very generous."

He added that the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, as well as the RVC Community Fund donated money to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys for needy village families. Asip noted that on North Village Avenue, also placed a food drop box at its studio so its members and participants could contribute to the drive.

Michael Caffrey, president of the RVC Youth Council, said that the village's generosity was pretty overwhelming, considering that over the past week, several organizations have held food drives outside of King Kullen. "The drive was really successful," Caffrey said. "It really shows that the families in the village who have it, are compassionate for those who don't. It's a nice testament to the people of Rockville Centre who are willing to give and help those less fortunate."
