Assemblyman Curran Honors RVC Veterans

Reverend Harald Kuehne and Augustine Lanzo were honored at the ceremony.

New York State Assemblyman Brian Curran hosted his inaugural “Veterans Hall of Honor” ceremony recently, recognizing Rockville Centre residents Reverend Harald Kuehne and Augustine Lanzo; local veterans who have distinguished themselves through bravery, patriotism and commitment.

The son of German immigrants, Reverend Kuehne enlisted in the Air Force to serve in World War II. For two years, he flew on missions between Mandalay and Rangoon supporting American operations in that locale. He also flew on supply missions to Central Burma supporting the British 4th Corps.

During his time in the armed forces he received numerous awards, including the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and four Battle Stars.

Coming home, Rev. Kuehne took advantage of the G.I. Bill, and earned various degrees, culminating in his ordination in the Lutheran Church in 1953. He has since served at Grace Lutheran Church in North Bellmore and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Rockville Centre. He is now retired but is currently chaplain to the Rockville Centre Fire Department and police department, and is on the board of South Nassau Communities Hospital.

Better known as “Gus,” Augustine Lanzo is a lifetime resident of Nassau County.  Inducted into the United States Army in 1943, he served in World War II until 1946, when he was given an honorable discharge as Infantry Tech. Corporal.

Always community minded, Gus was a volunteer fireman in Oceanside, a member of the Elks and Lions Clubs and a member of Kiwanis. He has been a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus since 1947 and served as secretary, treasurer, chancellor, deputy grand knight, grand knight and district deputy. He is also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

As an active member of the American Legion, Post No. 303 from 1997 to 2011, Gus served as post commander for eight years. During this time, he helped veterans process paperwork for medical assistance and find locations for therapy and other necessary aids. He also worked tirelessly to remodel the Oceanside Legion building and turned it into a beautiful venue for veterans’ functions.

A navy veteran, Frank Degen enlisted in the US military in 1952 and served on the USS Ross for four years. Honorably discharged in 1956, he returned to South Hempstead where he has lived since 1947. Prior to serving his country, Frank served his community as a member of the volunteer fire department, which he rejoined once he was discharged from the navy.

“Reverend Kuehne and Gus Lanzo exemplify true patriotism, and love of country and family. Their military service is a source of great pride to their families, and an inspiration to all within our community,” Curran said. “In their civilian lives, as in their service to our nation, they truly distinguish themselves, and I am honored to recognize these outstanding heroes at my “Hall of Honor” luncheon.”

A highlight of the ceremony was when Curran presented a $2,500 check to keynote speaker Paul Hastings, Ambassador to the Wounded Warriors Project.  Curran raised the funds through his participation in a recent Triathlon.

Joining in congratulating today’s honorees was Rockville Centre Mayor Francis Murray.
