South Side Girls Soccer Claims 16th New York State Title

The Lady Cyclones defeated Williamsville South and Somers to win the Class A state title over the weekend.

The South Side girls soccer team traveled upstate to Cortland with only one goal in mind. As they have done 15 times before in school history, the Lady Cyclones were focused on a New York State Class A title.

Battling tirelessly through a scoreless regulation with Somers High School of Section I on Sunday afternoon, followed by three scoreless overtimes, sophomore Katie Ford headed a ball over goalkeeper Beth Coppolecchia with just 1:01 remaining in the fourth overtime to claim title number 16 by a score of 1-0.

“As we got deeper into the overtimes, we were confident that we were going to score,” said Shannon McEntree, who completed her second year as South Side head coach. “We train for it, endurance wise, and we were on the attack the entire time and it was a matter of when we were going to put the ball in the back of the net.”

A day prior, South Side defeated Williamsville South of Section V by a 5-2 final score. In the semifinal matchup, senior Julie Beyer registered a hat trick and sophomore Christina Klaum scored twice. Klaum, who was named the finals MVP, led the team throughout the playoff run with 11 goals.

“Christina has been fantastic all season, but she really started to shine during the playoff bracket. On the field, she motivates the team and is constantly communicating,” McEntree added.

The Lady Cyclone defense, led by Beyer, senior Samantha Ford, and junior goalkeeper Kelsey Berki (10 saves), kept a talented Somers team off of the scoreboard. The eventual runner-ups finished with a record of 20-2-1, compared to a 15-2-4 overall record for champion South Side.

The run to a 16th title was by no means an easy task for South Side, who will graduate just six seniors. With shutouts of Lynbrook, Wantagh and Garden City, the Lady Cyclones topped then undefeated Division in triple overtime with a goal from Meghan Hines.

The win set up a Long Island title matchup with Suffolk champion Islip, where the Lady Cyclones edged out a 1-0 win. Klaum scored the lone goal in the first half to punch a ticket to the state tournament this past weekend.

South Side last won a state title in 2009, and with an upset in last years’ county finals, the team was looking for redemption. As their competition found out, it was only a matter of time before they found it.

“This season was just an incredible display of heart by the girls,” McEntee said.

With the majority of the team set to return next fall, a run for a second straight state title in Class A is very well within the realm of possibilities for the Lady Cyclones.

DPF, I found the link for the 500 ranking. It came from schooldigger.com and since that figure wasRead More put out before the bond vote, it was for 2011. Since then the 2012 figures have been updated and South Side is now ranked at #151 along with 14 other schools at #151. Unlike, the district, all I would like to see is information being brought to the public's attention. This is why I am posting the uptick in the schooldigger rating. So this is where we stand: Schooldigger #151 up from #508 in NY State US News #117 down from #22 in nation Newsweek #312 (I don't know what we were last year) The main point, however, is that when the ranking is good, you put out a press release and hang a banner on the wall. When the ranking declines, you are silent. This is especially egregious right before a contested board of ed election. Perhaps you are right that there really is no way to rank a school. But if that's the case, then the district can't just pick and choose which ranking to make public.

Been there done that: how disgusting of you to list descriptions of the PTA president and then hideRead More behind your anonymous posting. You should be ashamed of yourself. Want someone to post your employment status??

I'm enjoying your selective issues Never said the demographics changed, you clearly missed my pointRead More The bond was passed because the elementary parents got involved. Also, the bond was a smart move, borrowing money at such a low rate. Any accountant would tell you that The bond vote has NOTHING to do with affording college. One is $120 a year, the other is a 30 to 50 K expenditure. If you think the rise of 2 year colleges admissions doesn't have to do with the economy, then we can end our discussion now. The superintendent was given a 1 time annuity. Next year, he will be back to his usual top 10 ranking. Once again, nothing to do with test scores and if the public was so outraged, why aren't the board members being recalled? Still waiting for link of the 500 ranking in NYS Haven't located it

Hey Matt Hogan, While I don't buy into posts that you are Johnson's press secretary and him havingRead More a hand in running this publication, I do believe myself and many other readers here would appreciate an in depth, unbiased and objective interview w/ him asking the tuff questions your readers asked here. He always seems available to comment on and inflate the slightest bit of positive news, perhaps he would like the opportunity to comment on and explain his take on the latest rankings, etc. Have you or any member of your staff ever directly interviewed him or requested and interview w/ him and would you consider requesting such an interview?

It is nothing short of amazing that people are still rushing to the defense of Johnson/Burris andRead More their minions at the PTA. What's wrong w/ you people? When the rankings come out positive they do everything they can to publicise them from plaques on the wall to streaming video on the district website and everything in between. Yet not a peep on the latest rankings. 500+ ranking in NYS, people thats based solely on test scores not the # of kids taking the test and how many free lunches the district provides. Do any of you wonder at all why Johnson encouraged kids to "opt out" of NYS testing? If so let me help you out...The scores are going to be awful and would have been worse had all the kids participated. The quality of life in this town and its education system is circling the bowl, we need positive change not the same old go along to get along mentality. Pls think about voting for Ms Rubino, we need some balance and accountability on that board not a bunch of Johnson puppets. Not sure when Johnson's contract is up but he too has got to go, he is slowly destroying this district. We might try to hire Baldwin's superintendant as he really seems to know what he is doing when it comes to AP.

This is the funniest blog post ever. Someone thinks Patch is run by Johnson, another should haveRead More used the more appropriate pseudonym "know it all" and the most recent thinks the PTA is ruining our neighborhood. Go to a meeting, get involved, educate yourself. If you can't go to a meeting watch the local government and school channel. Then perhaps you would know that the bulk of the school budget is dictated by NY state.
