South Side Boys, Girls Basketball Teams Ready for Playoffs

Cyclones set for two tough weekend matchups.

The South Side High School boys and girls basketball team are both headed to the playoffs.

The defending Nassau County champion boys team comes into the 2013 Class A postseason ranked No. 8. 

Gerald Mitchell, Brendan Mcderby and Alex Sorenson have helped the Cyclones to a 6-4 season in Conference A-I and a 7-7 overall record. The trio, along with outside shooter Paul Pandolfi, will have its hands full against the ninth-seeded Roosevelt Rough Riders, who boast a roster full of scorers.

The boys tip off at 6 p.m. Friday at South Side High School.

The Lady Cyclones also managed to grab an eight seed and will face ninth-seeded Manhasset in the first round.

At 7-4 in Conference A-I and 10-6 overall, the Lady Cyclones are among the more balanced-scoring teams in the playoffs. The team's leaders on the court this year have been Jessica Hawley, Hanna Merrifield, Bridget Kiernan and Juliana Pellegrini.

The girls tip off at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at South Side High School.
