RVC Siblings Organize Soccer Camp for Local Children

Jennifer, Chris and Tyler Kahn carry on a summer tradition with two-week program.

During the last two weeks of July, RVC residents Jennifer, Chris and Tyler Kahn teamed up with the RVC Soccer Club for this year’s Kids Teaching Kids program at Skelos Field. Throughout the course of the program, more than 250 children came to learn about the sport, receive coaching from experienced players, and play soccer with their peers.

“The program began with our desire to give back to the community and encourage our current soccer players to interact with younger children with the hope of getting them interested in and excited about the sport,” said Jennifer Kahn, 25, who organized this year’s camp along with her brothers, Chris, 23, and Tyler, 20.

Kids Teaching Kids has been an annual summer tradition in RVC since 1972, when the high school boys’ soccer team began playing with younger children. According to Jennifer, it has evolved each year, but the underlying theme remains the same. “Our older soccer players share the great game of soccer with the younger children in a fun setting,” she explained.

The Kahns’ responsibilities as organizers included gathering equipment, publicizing the program and recruiting coaches. Barry Athletics donated the balls and tee shirts, and for each night of the program there were approximately 30 coaches from the RVC Soccer Club guiding the children. The young participants in Kids Teaching Kids ranged in age from four to nine years old.

“Our dad, Steve Kahn, coached us all and is currently a member of the Rockville Centre Soccer Board,” said Tyler Kahn, explaining his family’s involvement in RVC athletics. All three siblings, who attended St. Agnes Elementary School and Kellenberg Memorial High School, started out playing intramural soccer in RVC before going on to travel teams in high school and college.

“This is our second year of coordinating Kids Teaching Kids and once again, we enjoyed the experience,” said Chris Kahn. “The program has developed into an event that many young players look forward to every summer.”
