Lady Cyclones Blank Hewlett in Season Opener, 5-0

Freshman Christina Klaum scores three times; defense doesn't allow a shot on goal.

The South Side High School Lady Cyclones kicked off its 2010 season with a 5-0 win over Hewlett at the Dean Skelos Sports Complex last night, with freshman Christina Klaum leading the charge for South Side with three goals.

Klaum opened up the scoring on a shot that ricocheted off the top post and into the net for 1-0 Cyclones lead. A few minutes later, Klaum scored again, beating a Hewlett defender on a knee-buckling move and finding the net to give South Side a 2-0 edge.

Senior co-captain Caitlin Hines increased the Cyclones lead to 3 around the 35-minute mark of the second half with a goal of her own, but the scoring onslaught for South Side didn't end there. Freshman Kelsey Ford tallied a goal to push the Cyclones lead to 4, and then Klaum added her third goal of the game, completing the scoring hat-trick and securing the victory for South Side.

It was a spectacular Cyclones debut for both first-year coach Shannon McEntee and Klaum.  "She's a player," McEntee said of her dynamic freshman. "She has great vision on the field, and she moves the ball well. She's going to do great things for us."

McEntee explained that her squad posseses a balanced, potent attack with tons of depth on their roster.

"We're very talented," she added.  "We're very deep. We're going to spread the wealth around. Other girls will get their goals in, get lots of assists,  So, we're a deep team."

Senior co-captain Jacqueline Cifarelli, junior Alyssa Aydinoglu and sophomore Alex Reis registered assists for South Side in the lopsided win. But it wasn't just South Side's offense that was sharp in the 5-0 victory, as the defense did not surrender a shot on goal the entire game.
