Lady Cyclones Best Seaford, 3-0

Kayla Hospodka, Meghan Hines and Christina Klaum scored in the shutout.

The South Side Lady Cyclones soccer team gave the Seaford Lady Vikings all they could handle on Wednesday, putting on an offensive fireworks display in a 3-0 win.

Lady Vikings coach Suzanne Mooney said her team played some great soccer, but couldn't sustain it for the full 80 minutes. “We had a great first half,” she said. “I think we shocked South Side — they didn’t expect us to be that good. But as the game went on, they just wore us down.”

With South Side mounting a relentless offensive campaign in the first half, Seaford was on the defensive for the first 20 minutes, as the Cyclones demonstrated quickness, skilled ball handling, adept passing and a nose for the goal.

It wasn't until the 22-minute mark that South Side goalie Kelsey Berki (four saves) even had cause to touch the ball.

With less than four minutes left in the first half, South Side converted on a free kick from thirty yards out. South Side's Alex Reis sent the ball at Seaford’s net, and when their goalie couldn't control the ball, Kayla Hospodka took advantage and slammed it home for a 1-0 lead.

A relentless South Side offense scored twice in a three minute stretch of the second half — at the 20:48 mark, when the talented Christina Klaum sent one over the outstretched fingertips of Seaford's goalie, and again at 17:41, when Meghan Hines followed up on a cross of her own to score amidst a wild fracas in front of the Lady Vikings goal.

For South Side, it was a satisfying win. “I thought we played well,” said Lady Cyclones head coach Shannon McEntee. “We had good ball movement, moved the ball smoothly and found connections. I have been pushing my team for more offense, especially following up on plays, and that’s what we saw tonight.”

Next up for South Side is Plainedge on Sept. 21 at home. Game time's 4:30 p.m.
