Bulldogs Batter Cyclones, 56-0
South Side overmatched by potent Hewlett run game; give up nearly 280 rushing yards.
District officials could not have asked for a better day to host its Homecoming Parade last Saturday, as the sun and warm weather blanketed the village on a beautiful afternoon. Unfortunately, the celebration was followed by a disappointing 56-0 Cyclones loss to Hewlett.
The Cyclones (1-6) Â looked overmatched by the Bulldogs, who have only lost to conference powerhouses Lynbrook and Sewanhaka. On Hewlett's first offensive play of the game, junior Mark Rizzo broke a 58-yard touchdown run with seven minutes left in the first quarter. The seven-point advantage was as close as South Side would get to Hewlett, as the Cyclones continued to struggle on offense, getting shutout in back-to-back games.
Hewlett quarterback Alex Kahn ran for a 22-yard touchdown three minutes later, one of three touchdowns on the day for the senior play caller.

South Side had few opportunities to score, but couldn't cash in when the opportunities arose. In the second quarter, quarterback James Howard completed a beautiful 42-yard fly route pass to senior Evan Needell, but the Cyclones couldn't move past Hewlett's 15-yard line and missed the ensuing 35-yard field goal attempt. Hewlett then drove 80 yards, capped by a 41-yard touchdown pass from Kahn to junior Sam Mortorella.Â
Kahn threw another touchdown pass — a 35-yard strike —  with just a minute left in the half to increase Hewlett's lead to 28.

Martorella opened the second half for the Bulldogs with a 45-yard touchdown run. Hewlett scored three more times in the half, once off a Cyclones fumble, and finished the game with 276 rushing yards.
South Side plays West Hempstead on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.Â
