SSMS Students Recognized for National Spanish Exam Scores

Multiple South Side Middle School students recently attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2013 National Spanish Examinations.

A total of two gold, five silver and 11 bronze medals were acquired by middle school students, along with 14 honorable mentions.

“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with [more than] 156,000 students participating in 2013.”

Students from South Side Middle School have a long history of high achievement on these exams and are currently taught by Spanish teachers Kathleen Cerasi, Darcy Gilchrist and Amanda Marino.

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Gold Winners (95 percent or above): Sydney Levy and Agatha O’Connell.

Silver Winners (85-94 percent): John Beyrer, Ariel Lai, Mae Murray, Patrick Beyrer and Grace Feiner.

Bronze Winners (75-84 percent): Clifford Cornell, Michelle Cosares, Benjamin Dacek, Kendall Kutner, Anna Rodriguez, Erin Sherlock, Jessica Mauro, Alex Johnson, Grace Donovan, Allison Mullooly and Brandon Stein.

Honorable Mention (50-74 percent): Grace LaCava, Kelsey Quinn, James Testa, Kiersten Colvin, Victoria Coughlin, Kristen Enea, Adam Hamacher, John Healy, Kenneth Hoefer, Nikki Stamile, Leslie Cruz, Morley Hawriluk, Paulina Kenny and Lauren Mcnally.

The national average is 50 percent.
