SSHS Takes Second in LEGO Robotics Competition

South Side High School's LEGO Robotics Team was awarded second place in the Adelphi University LEGO High School Robotics Competition on April 20.

The competition tests the math, technology and science skills of students from the Long Island region.

Funded by a grant from the RVC Education Foundation, South Side launched its first LEGO Robotics team this year.

Competing teams received a kit of common parts that were used to build the core systems of the robot. With no instruction manual supplied, the South Side team came together three months ago to conceptualize, design, construct and program a robot to participate in the competition.

Under the guidance of advisor Herb Weiss, team members Michael Spelfogel, Bridget McFadden, Elizabeth Davoli, Forrest Butensky, Anthony Lai and Thomas Keady worked with hundreds of components including motors, mechanical parts, electrical circuitry and radio controllers to build their award-winning robot.
