South Side AD Addresses 'Red and Blue' Scoring Error

Controversy surrounds 97th annual event after scoring mishap.

South Side High School hosted the 97th annual Red and Blue competition earlier in March, the finale of which was referred to as a "fiasco" by several parents due to an error in scoring.

South Side Athletic Director Carol Roseto recently addressed the concerns of some of the students and parents over the final scoring.

Roseto told Patch that the final score was actually 57-57 going into the final announcement.

"In an effort to make things exciting, the events are not always announced in the order that they appear on the score sheet in the program, which makes it difficult to follow on the scoreboard," she said.

By the time the judges realized that the scoreboard was off by one point in red's favor, they had already announced the final category, which put the red team ahead by one.

"I was stunned and shocked and to be quite honest, I froze," Roseto said.

The announcement made Roseto doubt her own calculations, so the directors, the announcer and Roseto rushed into an office and double checked her numbers. After finalizing everything, the group came out and announced that it was a tie, not a one-point win for the red team.

"I cannot be more apologetic to all of the girls and boys involved," she said. "It was a human error for which I will always be sorry."

In an effort to prevent this from happening again, Roseto said they are going to ask the girls for suggestions on how to simplify the scoring and announcing process for upcoming years.
