RVC Residents Approve 2012-13 School Budget

1,940 residents voted for the $97,260,488 fiscal plan.

The 2012-13 proposed $97.2 million school budget passed on Tuesday night, with 1,940 voting for the fiscal plan and 888 voting against it. 

The 2012-13 budget, which stayed under the two percent tax cap with a 1.99 percent tax levy increase, received 68 percent of the vote. By law, it needed 50 percent to pass.

The fiscal plan is a 1.67 percent increase over this year's budget and will raise the average Rockville Centre homeowners' school taxes by $120. Through with some of the district's seven bargaining units, the district constructed a fiscal plan that stayed under the cap.

All programs and services will remain intact, school officials said, and teacher positions will be safe for the next two years (2012-13, 2013-14 school years).

The 2012-13 budget's 1.99 percent tax levy increase is a stark contrast to this year's $96.5 million plan, which contained a 4.89 percent tax levy increase and raised school taxes by $400.

School Board President Liz Dion ran unopposed and was reelected with 1,911 votes. Trustee Mark Masin also ran unopposed and was reelected with 1,847 votes.

Dr. William Johnson, superintendent of schools, thanked the community for supporting the budget and district schools.

"I just want to thank (the community) for keeping us alive and well," he said. "I'm so proud to be part of a community that invests in our childrens' future."
