Residents Approve 2011-12 School Budget

Gregg Spaulding and Mayda Kramer were elected to the Board of Education.

The 2011-12 proposed $96.5 million school budget passed on Tuesday night, with 1,956 voting for the fiscal plan and 1,369 voting against it.

The 2011-12 school budget, which carries a 4.89 percent tax levy, will increase the average homeowner's school taxes by an estimated $400, officials said. The total amount village residents will pay through the tax levy is around $4 million more than they did in the 2010-11 school year. The district, however, did lose $1.1 million in state aid.

The fiscal plan is an increase of 2.41 percent over the current budget. Officials said the increase is the second lowest in 19 years, and all current programs and services will remain in place.

School Board incumbent Gregg Spaulding ran unopposed and was reelected with 2,242 votes. Newcomer Mayda Kramer also ran unopposed and was elected with 1,369 votes. This will be Spaulding's first, three-year term on the board. About a year ago, Spaulding took over for former board member Kathy Horace after she stepped down before her term ended.

Dr. William Johnson, superintendent of schools, thanked the community for supporting the budget.

"I always view this as an investment in the future of our community," he said. "Our children are the future of our economy. The more that we can recognize and acknowledge the fact that well-educated young people are going to become better educated adults, then we have succeeded as a community in ensuring our future."
