Molloy, Village Agree on Parking Lease

College pays for 200 spots in Lot 12 for faculty use due to on-campus construction.

Rockville Centre officials recently finalized a lease deal with Molloy College that allows the school to use part of Parking Lot No. 12 during its 2010-11 school year. The lease agreement was approved at the July 20 board meeting.

According to Molloy spokesman Ken Young, the college will get 200 spots in Lot No. 12, which stretches from North Forest Avenue to Long Beach Road on the north side of Sunrise Highway. The lot will only be used by staff, Young noted.

Molloy will pay $43,000 in nine monthly payments of $4,777, said village spokesman Jeff Kluewer. Molloy will also pay the non-residential parking rate of $215 for each of the 200 spots, he explained.

Molloy needed additional parking for its faculty as it's currently undergoing extensive construction to build a new 57,000 square-foot on-campus student center. Ground was broken on the project in Sept. 2009, and the new building — which is expected to be ready for the 2011-12 school year — will house a theater, as well as an art gallery and a multimedia center.

"The spots in Rockville Centre will help us with parking during the construction period," Young said. "We will be providing transportation for the staff to and from the lot, via shuttle buses and vans," Young said.

The lot, located about 2.5 miles from Molloy's campus, has 329 spaces. Kluewer said he doesn't think the lease will adversely affect downtown parking.

"The temporary use of the 200 spots by Molloy will have no impact on downtown parking and little impact on the area," Kluewer said. "Lot No.12 usually has many empty spaces."
