Cyclones Hoops Receives Conference, County Honors

Nassau County champs' captains named to All-County and All Long Island teams.

The South Side Cyclones boys basketball team won its first since 2004, steamrolling their way through the playoffs and wining its four playoff matchups by an average of 12 points. The Cyclones finished the season 19-3.

On Wednesday, District Athletic Director Carol Roseto announced that not only did Head Coach Gerry D'Angelo earn Conference Coach of the Year honors, but captains Darren Nickelson and Ryan Spadaford were named to the First-Team All County and the Nassau County Coaches Association All Long Island team.

"This season was phenomenal," Roseto said.

Sharpshooter Kevin Coyle, starting center Tim Gangadeen and defensive stopper Robert Picchione also earned All-Conference honors.

D'Angelo, who led South Side to No. 11 overall in New York State for Class A boys basketball, thanked the district and community for its overwhelming support of the team.
