BOE Adopts $95.6M Budget for 2011-12

Average homeowner will pay around $400 more in taxes.

The Board of Education adopted its $95.6 million budget for the 2011-12 school year at Wednesday's meeting, but officials say they still cannot calculate the exact tax impact on an individual homeowner until the adjusted base proportions are determined by the county's assessor's office.

The average homeowner, school officials said, could see an increase of about $420 in school taxes.

The tax base in the village is divided into four classes: homeowners, apartments, utilities and commercial property. The adjusted base proportion, which is set by the Nassau County Assessor's Office, determines how the tax levy is divided among the four classes. The proportions change from year to year, but last year, homeowners paid about 72 percent of the tax levy.

Until the county releases those proportions, it will be impossible to calculate the exact tax impact on homeowners, officials said, but they do expect those numbers by the end of May.

Robert Bartells, assistant superintendent of finance, explained that some numbers in the district's budget brochure had changed since they were mailed. The average home assessment in RVC for 2011-12 is $580,400, however, the district's brochure stated it was around $595,000. The decrease in the average home assessment is down 4.35 percent from 2010-11.

The reason that is important, Bartells explained, is that if your home assessment decreases by 4.35 percent, those homeowners could see a decrease in school taxes. If your home assessment increases by more than 4.35 percent, those homeowners could see a higher average tax increase.
