Your LIRR Commute After Sandy

With commuter anger boiling over repairs to East River Tunnels, we want to know how your commute has been going.

There have been many challenges in the area since Hurricane Sandy struck last month, but one of the biggest has been fixing our damaged rail system.

A major issue has been the repair of two East River tunnels owned by Amtrak which the Long Island Rail Road uses to get into Manhattan.

Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, held a press conference in which he said he received assurances from Amtrak that the tunnels would be repaired by Christmas week.

Which leads to the question: how has your commute been since the storm? Tell us in the comments.

ha! they LIRR always sucked... Sandy's just a convenient excuse. LIRR/MTA wait for disasters to upgrade the system.
Pathetic. That's what you get with Monopolies.

I've emailed Carolyn McCarthy 4 times about changes in the Lirr over the past three years (before Sandy) and I never heard any response. I'm so glad was have the wonderful representation in Congress.

Nightmare commute to and from Penn Station. Overcrowding to the max from RVC. Supposedly, LIRR is waiting for Amtrack to fix signals in the tunnels. How about a little pressure on Amtrack to get this done already?!

How long will the LIRR be able to use Sandy as an excuse? Until a new storm hits next year?

The only direct trains to Penn Station from RVC each morning are 6:45, 8:25 and 8:37. You can't really count the 8:25 because most days you can't get on the train- it pulls into RVC and it is jam packed with people, as we are the last stop before Penn Station. I tried it one Friday and was able to stand in the aisle. Most bosses are not ok with you coming to work at 10 am so the 8:37 is not a good option. That leaves getting on a train to Brooklyn- there are some of those at better times and then you switch at Jamaica and deal with scrambling for a seat there. The ride home seems to be getting better. I stay away from the trains that make all stops to Babylon, unless they are off-peak trains and I try to get to Penn earlier than I used to. You can't get a seat if you get there close to departure time. They are saying this will continue until Mid January but I don't believe them- they will probably take even longer. I'd like to know what genius decided to cut the most trains from the busiest line. I'd also like to know why they haven't thought of adding more cars to the limited trains that pull into the station. At least people wouldn't have to stand in the aisle. I would also love it if the news channels would stop posting that LIRR is near normal schedule. They should post, delays, cancellations and overcrowding. Most trains come late, even though the signs and announcements show they are on time.
