Village OK's Election District Consolidation; Local Law Public Hearing Set for Jan. 25

Trustees still debating how to implement it, but say June 21 election would be held at rec center.

In a money-saving effort, Village Board trustees approved consolidating Rockville Centre's 22 election districts into one, unified district at Monday's board meeting. The move also consolidates the village's 10 polling locations into one main locale — the recreation center — for the June 21 elections.

According to Trustee David Krasula, the consolidation will save the village between $10,000-$12,000. Mayor Mary Bossart said that since village officials do not know what type of voting machines it will have for the June election — paper ballots, lever machines or the new scan-tron type — it simplifies the process by having it in one central location.

Krasula added that the details on how it will be implemented is still being discussed, but noted that it could run similarly to how the school district runs elections, where voting tables are separated by last name in alphabetical order.

Trustees also discussed five , and will host a public hearing on the proposed laws on Jan. 25. The local laws deal with changes to village code in terms of setbacks and building height, what time construction can begin and end, and what kind of uses a business can have for levels above its first floor.

The next board briefing session is Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
