RVC  has been named a 2010 Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, the 23rd consecutive year it has earned the honor. The award recognizes the village's ongoing commitment to improving and renewing its stock of trees.

Each year, the village plants more than 100 new trees, most as part of its residential tree-planting program.

Since 1986, more than 3,800 trees have been planted as part of the program, in addition to the trees planted on village property and in commercial areas by the village. To become a Tree City, a community must have a department that attends to trees, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

Tree City USA is sponsored in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Village Electric Department Wins Award

The Rockville Centre Electric Department has earned the American Public Power Association’s Electric Utility Safety Award for safe operating practices in 2010.

More than 255 utilities entered the annual contest. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker hours and judged for the most incident-free records during 2010, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

APPA is the national organization representing more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community and state-owned electric utilities.

RVC PD Explorer Program to Commence

The Rockville Centre Police Department is starting an Explorer Post to acquaint young people with the nature and complexity of police service and to encourage careers in law enforcement.

The program is open to males and females between the ages of 14 and 21 who have completed the eighth grade and have no serious police involvements. Applicants must be Nassau County residents, pass a criminal background check, express an interest in law enforcement and have at least a 2.0 GPA.

Interested teens and their parents should attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. in the second floor courtroom of Village Hall.

The program brings Explorers into direct contact with police officers through its meetings, projects, social functions and training. Explorers earn responsibility and respect and are recognized for their public service. The program encourages Explorers to seek careers in law enforcement, to make ethical choices and to achieve their individual potential.

Interested individuals may contact Det. Michael Norwood at 516-766-1577 for further information.
