Village Board News: AC Law Passed, Fireman's Field Deal Reached

Fire officials said the village and the school district have agreed to renovate Fireman's Field.

A new local law recently passed will allow residents to install central air conditioner units in their side yards within three feet of the property line as long as it meets sound emission specifications.

Under the new law, if a resident wants to install a central AC unit in their sideyard, it cannot emit a noise level higher than 60 decibels. That's about the same noise level as a conversation between two people.

The old code stated that central air conditioner units had to be 30 feet from the neighbor's property line, or about 50-60 feet from the home. That code was put into affect years ago because units were so loud it disturbed surrounding neighbors. Due to restrictions on how far units had to be from the property line, many homeowners were forced to put their AC unit in the front of their homes.

That will no longer be the case under the new code, as newer units emit far less noise than older models.

RVC Fire Department Chief John Busching said at the April 3 board meeting that the village and school district have reached an agreement to refurbish Fireman's Field.

Busching said the deal would extend the field to the other side of the street, thus giving more room for parking as well as fire department functions like tournaments and picnics. The track would also be repaved under the proposal, Busching said, which has not been done for more than 30 years.

The renovation will add more than 50 parking spots at Fireman's Field.

"This is about a 30-year-old problem that they have (residents who live near the school) and I hope it alleviates some of the parking issues," Busching said.
