Special Election, Nominees Announced for Empty Legislature Seat

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

The sudden death of Legis. Peter Schmitt, R-Massapequa, has left a void for many in the Nassau County Legislature.

Republicans are without a Majority Leader and the legislature will be without a presiding officer.

Finally, his constituents in the Massapequas and parts of Seaford are without a representative in the Nassau County Legislature.

The lawmaking body is now deadlocked with nine Democrats, nine Republicans and one empty seat.

Officials are moving quickly to fill that seat and County Executive Ed Mangano has called a special election in order to do just that. It will be held on election day, Nov. 6.

The Nassau GOP has tapped Michael Venditto of Massapequa to run for the open seat in an attempt to retain the legislature's majority. Meanwhile, Democrats have selected Massapequa Park Republican Joanne Maglione as their candidate in the race.

Tax Breaks for Small Businesses

Nassau County began a program Friday that allows small businesses -- those wilth less than 100 employees -- tax breaks "for new equipment purchases and building renovations."

According to Newsday [paid link], Local Enterprise Assistance and Development Service (LEADS) will be the backbone of the project, helping the small business comply with government regulations.

Companies seeking a sales tax exemption on machinery or construction materials for improvements to an office, store or factory could save up to $99,000. Projects valued at $1.1 million or less would be eligible for the tax break, which would be given in exchange for commitments not to lay off workers, and if possible, to hire more.

Business owners looking to comply with regulations can contact someone at the program's phone number (516-571-1745) or email address (leads@nassauida.org).

Housing Lottery for Returning Veterans Announced

Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts were invited earlier this week to enter a lottery to win a brand-new house built by Homes for Homecoming Heroes, Inc. on a site in Hicksville that was donated by Nassau County. Homes for Homecoming Heroes, a not-for-profit corporation, will select a qualified veteran who is in need of housing and construct a residence on the property to suit the specific needs of the selected veteran.  The veteran will then be able to purchase the new home at the cost of construction.

With voluntary labor and the donation of materials, the estimated cost to build a 1,500 square foot home with an attached garage is approximately $150,000.  Construction is expected to begin in October.

Veterans must have served in Iraq or Afghanistan within the last 12 years, earn a minimum of $47,000 annually in total family yearly income and qualify for a mortgage. A 1-percent down payment will be required, with the principal repaid over a 30-year period.  For more information or to receive an application, please contact Larry Sklar at Homes for Homecoming Heroes at (646) 641-8460 or write to Homes for Homecoming Heroes, P.O. Box 20, Jericho, NY 11753.

Venditto is a great pick for Legislator. He is well known in Massapequa and comes from a good and well known family.

(Continued from above)
Maglione on the other hand seems particularly ignorant of her desired role. She claims (falsely) that Republicans were responsible for raising her school taxes. Maybe she should run for the school board as the Legislature has no responsibility for school taxes
JOE October 13, 2012 at 07:58 pm
The republicans are responsible for most of the finacial mess that we in nassau county and the country is in right now.
Nassau Taxpayer October 13, 2012 at 08:04 pm
Perhaps they should adopt Clint Eastwood's stance and "talk to the empty chair".
Archie Bunker October 13, 2012 at 10:47 pm
Why is that?
Former Congressman Frank, Former Senator Dodd and former Madam Speaker Pelosi are not responsible for the mess as well Stop drinking the kool-aid and be a informed citizen
tony October 14, 2012 at 12:07 am
If you pay attention to the current school property taxes, it was lower assessments that caused the rise in taxes AND IT IS NASSAU COUNTY supervisor and legislators that formulated the lower assessments in order to avoid challenges. However, homeowners still challenged and won because NASSAU no longer has to pay the refunds, School Districts have to pay them. Therefore NASSAU COUNTY appproved almost all challenges (87%) causing further lowering of total assessment. EVEN if school budgets remained the same Taxes would still go up
For example 2012 $300,000 SCHOOL BUDGET DIVIDED BY $150,000 ASSESSED VALUE = $2,000 2013 $300,000 SCHOOL BUDGET DIVIDED BY $100,000 ASSESSED VALUE = $3,000
JOE October 14, 2012 at 12:56 am
Why is that? who is responsible for pushing for deregulation the most? republicans how did we get into the financial mess that we have ? dergulation. when we were losing 750,000 jobs a month , who was in the white house? a republican. who got us into 2 wars? a republican president. who was in the whitehouse when 23 million jobs were created? a democrat. who has been in the whitehouse in the last two years when 5.2 million jobs were created? a democrat. who has made it their mission to block all bills that will create jobs in a top priority to deny the president a second term? republican. who hides there money in the cayman islands for the purpose of evading taxes while complaining that he does not care about 47% of the voting population? Romney. I could spend weeks on this list that is kool aide free and 100% FACTS
Archie Bunker October 14, 2012 at 01:47 am
Sorry Joe,
President Clinton -- A Democrat was in charge when Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act was passed. This repealed Glass-Steagall. Many consider this to be one of the major causes of the current financial crisis Sorry that the facts prove you wrong -- Both Republicans and Democrats are responsible
JOE October 14, 2012 at 01:58 am
Yes that is true both parties are reponsible . My point is that everybody knows that and the republican party's mantra is still deregulation
JOE October 14, 2012 at 02:01 am
the republicans also have blocked bills intended to create jobs because it would help Obama get re-elected. That is an undeniable fact
Vincent October 14, 2012 at 10:52 am
Nassau Taxpayer: I missed you. Glad to see you are back to posting again. You must have had enough of watching Sesame Street. You can only watch so much of Big Bird.
Nassau Taxpayer October 14, 2012 at 10:56 am
Took a while to stop laughing at how Eddie Munster -- your fave, "Junior" Ryan -- couldn't come up with a single detail, a single number, even after the moderator asked him THREE TIMES.
Eddie and Mittens got NOTHING.
Archie Bunker October 14, 2012 at 12:33 pm
What bills were those -- Please be specific
Obama a socialist ??? In 1905 Lenin called his underground newspaper Vperyod (Forward) Either Team Obama does not know history, has a warped sense of humor, or figures imformed voters will not know For him, forward is really backward
Vincent October 14, 2012 at 04:06 pm
Nassau Taxpayer: As a huge supporter of Big Bird and Sesame Street will you be going here? Oh come on! How could you not. I answered my own question.
" Plans to save Big Bird, the fuzzy yellow character on U.S. public television's "Sesame Street," from possible extinction are taking shape in the form of a puppet-based protest next month dubbed the "Million Muppet March." The demonstration is planned for November 3 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., three days before the general election."
Nassau Taxpayer October 14, 2012 at 04:22 pm
A Muppet march? In that case, Romney and Ryan should be there.
bob gee October 14, 2012 at 08:49 pm
